Avuncular curmudgeon. Arrant pedant. Remarkably unremarkable, consequently inconsequential. Never could get the hang of Thursdays. (Scorpio) (✶✶✶✶) https://hubbit.blog

I see we can pin now. This was my pin over there, for years. I guess over here it can be a pin of a pin…

THREAD.

3 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he had been living, in rural Cornwall, and decided he wanted to live with us instead.

We decided to call him Jim.

This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st, 2022.

Today is the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Mahna Mahna on Sesame Street. You’re familiar with it by now, of course, but... well, it never hurts to be reminded, does it?

Why is this more important THIS YEAR? Our federal food-borne illness surveillance system and food factory inspections have completely broken down. Do not assume "the worst is an upset stomach" ❤️‍🩹
Greetings from a microbiologist (yep!): think of food safety this holiday!
- Cook/reheat foods until at least 160F
- Don't let your food sit out for hours on the table, it will reheat fine
- Use VERY CLEAN serving utensils and platters for your food (keep your hands and licks to your own portion)

Marinades are great! I’m tired of doing all the work of cooking. You ingredients just sit together and think about how you ought to taste

My aunt who famously can’t cook tried to make a pumpkin pie. She didn’t know what cloves were, so she put garlic cloves in it. Whole.

Listen to me: if you are thinking of deep frying a turkey, I want you to go on YouTube right now and learn from those mistakes.

Then I want you to buy a level. And a fire extinguisher. And review high school physics. And your insurance policies.

Best of luck.

The "Pope at the microphone" meme is missing one that I would think would be a shoo-in: The Pope Smokes Dope.

Friendly reminder not to ruin Thanksgiving dinner by bringing up politics…ruin Thanksgiving dinner by asking about the halacha of a chick standing with one leg within 50 cubits from the dovecote and one leg beyond 50 cubits.

What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key
Now, what you hear is not a test, I'm rapping to the beat
And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet
You see, I am Pontifex and I'd like to say hello

Last re-whatever-these-are-now: I have a special fondness for the amazing west coast voice actors. Mel Blanc of course, but Daws Butler, Paul Frees, Peter Leeds, June Foray, and Bea Benaderet come to mind. Butler, Frees, Leeds, and Foray all worked with Stan Freberg as well.

Daws Butler, BOTD (1916-1988) is on the Mount Rushmore of voice actors of the 20th century.
Yogi Bear, Elroy Jetson, and dozens of other iconic and instantly recognizable voices.
Butler later trained Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson) and many other notable voice actors.

Also, if you plant them they don't actually grow birds.
"Bird seed" is actually somewhat of a misnomer, as anyone can eat the seed.

The writers of Doctor Who solved this problem decades ago.
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."
