Seriously. I have to actively fight against the discomfort. It’s not comfortable being openly positive when most things surrounding you are negative. It’s an active choice to lean into it, believe it, and spread it.
Lean into it. It feels corny as shit. That’s the point. Layer that shit on, my god, we need to be hopeful! Anything less is kissing it all away. It starts in you.
Since people find being hopeful and optimistic so cringe these days, let me remind you once again that there isn’t a single liberation movement in the world that wasn’t built on hope and optimism.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

As I always do with boycotts, I urge: be tough with corporations, gentle with individual buyers. For some people, Black Friday sales are the way they get their kids jackets that fit, shoes that hold up to the weather. Yelling at them doesn’t help the cause.

Probably my most annoying political opinion that informs a lot of how I understand a lot of interactions is that "queer people" isn't an innate group that exists in a vacuum. It is not some sort of natural state that develops without agitation. "Queer" is a political alliance, even subconsciously.
