Same.

Also, I am spending less and less time here on bsky for the same reason.

I have decided that knowing every terrible thing that happens in a given day is not good for me and what might be better is to attempt to connect with my community and do things.

This might be better for you too. ❤️
Unless I absolutely must for professional reasons, I will not be watching your nuclear war movie. I will not be watching your incredibly bleak and depressing murder show. I will not be watching your artistic despair. It’s nothing personal, I just don’t order water when I’m already bailing my boat.
It happens within the US too.. Plenty of white people in the Northern US will claim that racism is a Southern problem.
The thing about being an US born person of immigrant extraction who has also lived in a couple of other countries and traveled to a bunch more is... I can be both very clear eyed in the way the US sucks while also being aware of how other countries use the USA's failings to distract from their own.

Normal is understanding that what is in my neighbors pants is none of my business and it's not my place to decide what is "weird" or not.

If Gov. Haircut wants the party to be more normal and less judgemental he should start with himself.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Nobody understands the meaning of “Gilded Age” even though they only need to know one of the two words means “looks-like-gold” (derogatory).

liberalism is going to require something martial and vicious and somewhat fanatic if we want it to survive. it won't be the liberalism we grew up with. it will be an uglier, harder thing for an uglier, harder world.

I love this for Ohio State University...
Former Ohio State University students trying to get billionaire Les Wexner to testify about Richard Strauss — a former campus doctor who allegedly abused dozens of men — staged a protest at a board of trustees meeting, where they brought up Wexner’s past friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
OSU alumni hold photos of billionaire Les Wexner with Jeffrey Epstein while demanding testimony
“We believe Wexner’s testimony will shed light,” former OSU wrestler Tom Lisy said about the abuse allegations against Dr. Richard Strauss.

This is your occasional reminder that, if you like Neil Gaiman's stuff, but can't bring yourself to like it anymore for justifiable reasons, Tanith Lee is the author he is credibly accused of extensively cribbing from, and her work is on Audible, and AMAZING.

It’s hard to describe the 80s. I’m trying to do that very thing right now in my writing. But this comes as close to time travel as is possible. This was the 80s.
The Max Headroom Christmas Special must be seen to be believed.

My favorite part is in the beginning where each of the guest stars’ names look like they’re flying out of the turkey’s asshole.

Working on a thought-tool called "stupid drunk guy in a bar". Works like this: If the take you're responding to is essentially being mumbled by a clearly very stupid drunk guy in the bar you're at, is it worth starting a big public discussion with him?
Today we've decided to center:

- some genre author with fewer than 2k followers who said something insipid about an industry where he has no relevant experience or connection

- a Cato Institute ghoul with the handle "normative" and a substack smugly saying we need to be more serious about eugenics

The hype for this was incredible.

They made a big point of not showing it as long as they could and when they did it they hype deflated like a huge balloon. People could not get away from it fast enough.

They were right about the need for personal transport, but folks bought ebikes.
Younger people who didn't witness it cannot fathom the hype around the Segway. Every news station agreed it would revolutionize the entire social fabric of the Earth. That all future humans would divide history between the savage days of the past, and the soon to be new era of zoom zoom scoot scoot.

Americans absolutely do buy station wagons.

How many Subarus do you see driving around on the daily?

We bought a Mazda 3 wagon which we love and looks like a shooting brake. I see those things all over now.

What they don't buy are American made wagons.
There have been multiple attempts to sell a modern station wagon to Americans, the problem is that almost nobody actually bought them

Pepper always seemed like a window into the nihilism and death urge that you see in certain kinds of people.

I think a lot of the Surfers work has that feeling washing over it if it isn't front and center like it is here. Of course the Surfers being them really want to push people's nose in it.
I remember as a little kid listening to "Pepper" by the Butthole Surfers and thinking "I don't really understand what's going on in this song I bet it's messed up grown up stuff I'll understand later" and now I'm nearly 40 and still have no idea what the song is supposed to be about.
