I actually think this is a great little illustration of how fundamentally joyless these people are: they don’t find or take pleasure in the things most non-hateful people are able to—food, sex, human connections, art

A great essay on why close reading is a more radical methodology than most people think and why university managers don’t like those of us who teach it!

Trump: Played golf at his resort and trash-tweeted.
Vance: Gave a speech trashing the tradition of turkey dinner.

Tell me again about this party of traditional values….I’ll wait.

Quantum mechanics unleashed the Trinity Test upon the American desert and the world. David Lynch's Trinity Test transmits that quantum state as the fabric of American cultural economy: I am dead yet I live. Timecodes Series Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 8 examines every minute of Lynch's masterpiece.

Please understand, if you are not in higher ed in the US, that this is a playbook that is so common that instructors brace for it (and you can see that in the feedback to the paper, which for sure took more time than the original submission did, & probably at least one meeting)
My favorite part of this is her contacting the fucking governor first, four hours after getting her essay feedback

In a new leaked memo, the FDA outlined plans to make it much harder to get new vaccines approved, claiming, without sharing evidence, that the COVID vaccines have killed at least 10 children.

This is so reckless. The science shows us that COVID vaccines have saved millions of lives.

Remember, too, that Hegseth would have been rejected if a single additional Republican senator — or, JD Vance — had joined Sen. Collins, McConnell, and Murkowski in voting no with the Democrats. See: www.senate.gov/legislative/...

"Western civilization," the font, the 11 stars - 11 states in the confederacy, for the record.

Why is this never news? Why are we letting our government agencies do this sort of thing while the news agencies report on hallucinated trade deals and act like everything is normal

Is it bad that Im so jaded by dealing with university leadership that I am not surprised at all that this is how they react to "AI"?
Probably.
But university admins have proven themselves to be consistently rightwing, anti-labor and not particularly interested in the actual work that academics do.
We are living at a time when university leadership amplifies anti-intellectual tropes and technologies

These are very troubling times

A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?
Execs are embracing AI more than their employees are, new research suggests
