Michael Tracey has spent the last two days getting mad at Rob Reiner for criticizing Russia, and getting mad at people for remembering their favorite Rob Reiner movies.

He's so pathetic.

NEW: President Trump is expanding the previous 19-country travel ban to a whopping 39 countries (plus the Palestinian Authority), and appears to expand a block on legal immigration to now include spouses, children, and parents of U.S. citizens, who were previously exempted.

Cars are a lot slower than people think. This driver commutes at 4 MPH. That's barely faster than walking (avg walking pace is around 3.3 MPH)

They could cut their commute to 15 minutes biking at 12 MPH, but they might not have a safe route to do so

We are forcing people into terrible car commutes

This also makes the leftist defense of Russia even stupider because Putin explicitly referred to Lenin creating the ethnic republics within the USSR as his great mistake in the speech announcing the full scale invasion
Another fun implicit assumption from a lot of Russophiles, especially but not exclusively leftist ones, is that 1917 was a baptism that washed away all the sins of the Russian Empire so thoroughly that modern Russia should never have to reckon with them (even as they benefit from them)
The issue is that the modern Russian Federation *does* have substantial ideological continuity with the 19th century empire. Its overwhelmingly dominant political ideology is specifically that of Russian nationalism that seeks to restore the empire.

Pretty crazy that Musk willfully killed 100,000's of people *earlier this year* yet Corporate Media still regularly talks about him without mentioning that.

This is what passes for progressivism and climate policy in California. Jane Kim’s answer for elevated fire risk and actuarial risk? Put it on the public dime. Urban renters should bail out well to do exurban property owners and landlords in fire zones. FAIR plan is already a ticking time bomb!

old twitter was like a place in interwar berlin, paris, or shanghai people have romantic memories about in spite of witnessing knife fights between prostitutes daily and heroin junkies overdosing
My pleases-nobody sense of Return To Twitter Discourse is that the place can never return to what it was, and can never return to the idealized past version we imagine either, nor can that idealized past version be constructed anywhere else because it was always romantic self-regarding bullshit

Here's a fun thing I just learned: If you're a magazine or catalog or other bulk mailer who is willing to add AI-generated content to your mailing, USPS will reward you with a 5% discount—potentially many thousands of dollars!

How on earth does this benefit USPS? www.usps.com/business/pro...

Another US airstrike in Somalia happened yesterday, near Kismayo. AFRICOM released no casualty figures or other information beyond saying it "targeted" al-Shabaab. This is by my count the 87th strike or series of strikes announced by AFRICOM this year, by far the most ever in a year in Somalia.

Shout out to winter Divvy riders who’ve been braving extreme cold across Chicago:

12/13 (low 4°F): 3,242 rides
12/14 (low -1°F): 2,333 rides

On my ride in this morning, it was 10°F but felt like -5°F and people were still out riding. Protected bike lanes on Grand Ave made it possible and safe!
