I was actually in Colorado when the Marshall Fire touched off, we were coming down from the mountains to my sister's house in Golden and I had my husband take a picture of "that weird storm cloud" I'm so east coast I didn't even recognize a wildfire

And guess what?

The FCC immediately changed the website to state that the agency is not independent right after Carr's comments!

AGAIN, the power where this office EXISTS is about to be shut down as an effort to prevent a wildfire today bc of climate change JFC, it's OUR COUNTRY not HIS. Cannot even contain my rage about the irony, esp TODAY
Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

But yeah, shut down NCAR. We are in the absolute worst timeline.
NEW: Xcel Energy says it will preemptively shut off power to 50,000 customers in Colorado at 10AM due to extreme winds and fire danger.

Xcel now says similar conditions on Friday may result in some customers being without power for three days. co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-saf...

My sister's school district in JeffCo (just south of Boulder) is closed today because they are taking down the power grid at 10am due to high winds that create wildfire conditions. (We could see the marshall fire from her house when we were there in 2021.) But sure, screw climate research.
NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

My hometown! When I was a kid, we had a quake and my Bay-area born dad grabbed us all and had us in doorways immediately (we survived, it was not a bay -area level quake)
The epicenter appears to be up in Whitney Cove, the fish were probably freaking out.

More Americans got measles this year than Olivia Nuzzi’s book. Guess which got more press coverage. Let's change that.

Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.

Some good news. Gov Mills won’t veto the bill that stops local Maine law enforcement working with ICE/CBP. And she’ll (finally) repeal a LePage executive order that required enhanced cooperation with those those agencies. #mepolitics

Maine law enforcement will not make dangerous promises with ICE | Gov. Janet Mills
We cannot turn a blind eye to ICE’s unacceptable actions, which is why I've chosen to allow a bill that limits police cooperation with the federal agency to become law.

One way that the reaction to Rob Reiner's murder mirrors Charlie Kirk's is that the best way to eulogize each of them is to quote their words, and in both cases, doing so pisses off conservatives.
Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.

Elon's little serfs are quite literally begging journalists to come back because every publicly available source of data shows people have fled the platform and young people won't use it.

They are literally begging regular people to come back. Don't do it! It is a website by and for actual Nazis!

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.

With the latest mass shooting at Brown University, this might be a good time to mention that Bill Clinton’s assault weapons ban reduced mass shooting deaths by 43% - but after George W Bush & Republicans let it expire, mass shooting deaths spiked by 239%.

We’re closing in on two decades of Republicans telling you, in no uncertain terms, that they do not care about kids being shot dead. In schools, in movie theaters, at church, in the street. They. Do. Not. Care. But hey, at least they’re good at racism and destroying the economy, amirite.
