This is precisely how fascism works, by grabbing at and taking away a little more freedom whenever events lend themselves to it. Bit by bit you lose your rights, until you turn around and realize the road you're on has been long, and democracy is well behind you over the horizon.
The admin is wasting no crisis... Sec. Kristi Noem said she is suspending the diversity visa lottery program (DV-1) after the Brown University suspect entered the U.S. through it in 2017.

I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

There was a delightful middle-aged trans woman who had just transitioned in my gender studies classes in the aughts. Literally everyone was chill and excited to help her learn the ropes. This is all manufactured bullshit.
Think about this. Did you hear trans panic headlines in the 2000s? No.

Conservatives weren’t “worried” about trans people until the day they lost on Marriage Equality.

Once they realized most of us are just fine with gay marriage, they needed a new wedge issue and started attacking trans people.
I’m rewatching Mad About You & theres a joke where Ursula the ditzy waitress mistakes a recurring character for a post-op trans woman and immediately talks about how great she looks now, then deadnames her as part of a running joke at Ursula’s expense. In 1995. The great trans scare is manufactured.

Before satellite mega-constellations began taking off in 2019, satellites used to go months without risking a collision in orbit.

Now they have less than a week to take evasive maneuvers, and the window keeps shrinking. My @sciam.bsky.social story below.

Feelings are interesting. Sometimes, it’s not that you don’t know how you feel—it’s that you can’t get to how you feel. Because it’s buried under 1 million other things.

Sometimes, you have to approach your heart like an excavator. An archaeologist. Someone who is constantly following a red string.

Thin does not equal healthy. Etch this onto your brains. A friend was in chemo, losing weight, miserable, and people told her how great she looked because the diet industry reprogrammed your brains.

Don't comment on other people's bodies without invitation to do so, maybe.
