Anyway, in 2026 you should cancel your newspaper subscriptions — including to their games and recipes — and funnel that money toward independent journalists who don’t hate you and think you’re stupid.

This piece by @melodyschreiber.com is a must-read. Most people don't know what CDER is, but it is responsible for the regulation of all the drugs we put in our bodies. Hoeg is unqualified for CDER director. The only reason she was appointed is that she is an anti-vaxxer and a friend of Vinay Prasad.
Tracy Beth Høeg has no apparent experience with creating or regulating drugs, but she did make a name for herself casting doubt on some vaccines. Her appointment as the acting FDA drugs chief signifies a greater focus from Trump's FDA on (ending) vaccines. From me www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

"New Mexico created a new alert earlier this year to help find Native people who go missing."

"But since the Turquoise Alert went into effect in July, New Mexico State Police have only issued six, despite 27 requests from local law enforcement agencies."

A new alert for missing Native people has been issued just six times. State police deny most requests.
The denials are due to the way state police interpret the definition of "missing person" in state statute, a spokesperson says.

Once you look for, "does this [article / op-ed / claim by a politician] consider the 80% of Americans who live in urban areas to be real Americans?" you will see it everywhere, because the answer is usually "no."
I'm entirely serious about this: until you internalize the view that urban America is Real America, you won't see the urgency of structural reform of an American government whose fundamental structures so disadvantage its population centers—the great engines of its prosperity, progress, & culture.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not

One thing that brings me an odd comfort during all the nervous system shocks of the general malfeasance on display is the reminder that most of it isn’t new, it’s just more *visible.* As are the people who will always lie down for it, and those who stand up and fight it.
As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

An exceptionally stupid and contingent set of circumstances made Stephen Miller the most influential ideologue in the US. I saw someone wondering why the elites and the MSM don't keep banging the drums about the fascist in chief calling people "radical left scum" like they have and continue to do about "deplorables." It's because they agree with the fascist that leftists are scum and also do not fear the left(s), lol.

When I hear this, I think of the people who were in the streets in Ferguson in 2014-2015 for 375 days STRAIGHT while the national guard was called up and people were being brutalized by cops in the streets for WEEKS. Complete amnesia.
“Why aren’t you in the streets” is a slap in the face to all of those people who been in the streets since Occupy

I recently watched, with great surprise and disappointment, a weeklyshowpodcast segment in which you and other "personalities," gleefully mocked and derided the relatively small subset of individuals who continue to wear a face mask in public.

This is an extremely fair point. There’s a LOT to criticize us for, but many people have also been successfully organizing their asses off under a climate of state violence, white supremacy, surveillance, union-busting, and in a legacy media landscape that refuses to acknowledge any of it.
