While every administration has fired some military leaders, none has relieved so many, so early in their tenure, and in this dramatic fashion.
How Military Leaders Should Respond to Trump’s Norm-Busting
There’s no shame in getting fired when it is not for cause.

Looking forward to getting my own copy of @kschake.bsky.social’s book, and this excerpt certainly whet’s the appetite.

So, sending troops to Chicago or Baltimore would be much more complicated than either LA or DC.

@lindsaypcohn.bsky.social do you have any insight on the authority to operate in IL? I get the base but leaving the base what stops local cops from stopping them?

Pritzker: "I refuse to pretend that any of this is normal ... I refuse to fall into the pundit trap that demands we sacrifice vital constitutional rights if it's being done in the fake guise of fighting crime."

I love the photo — it’s 1943, FDR in Morocco enroute to the Casablanca conference, being saluted by soldiers whose shadow you see, generals (including Patton and Devers) arrayed saluting both the president and soldiers, FDR’s hat and hand over his heart.

I just received my first copy of the book!

I've noticed that "disobey unlawful orders" has become something of a get out of jail free card when it comes to difficult civil-military relations discussions. Up there with "oath to the Constitution."

I often see people reposting a paraphrase of the “Nuremberg defense.” The paraphrase is that “I was following orders” is not a defense. To be clear, this “defense” only fails for patently unlawful orders.

It is not relevant in 99.9% of cases. Actions of most employees will not be patently unlawful.

Here, I wrote about how Trump's use of the National Guard and active duty military in American cities isn't primarily a problem of civil-military relations.

The thing that blows my mind is there were dudes resigning over not having enough troops to invade Iraq and a entire “revolt of the generals” over the bush administrations handling of Iraq but when it comes to yet another deployment of active duty troops…radio silence

The safety of the people of Illinois is always my top priority.

There is no emergency that warrants the President of the United States federalizing the Illinois National Guard, deploying the National Guard from other states, or sending active duty military within our own borders.

The more this happens, the less Americans will like and respect our military.
