She/Her, 少し日本語, probably nerding out about ecology or tokusatsu right now. Clinging by my fingernails to a deeply held belief that, as the late, great Paul Wellstone said, "We all do better when we all do better."

Bigfin squids (genus Magnapinna) have a reputation for being eldritch looking creatures, but that's mostly from some low res footage where they are just floating with their arms dangling.

When you get see them swimming, they look like a regular squid shaped squid, if you ignore their noodley arms.

There's so many great cold-weather strategies in this thread and the replies. Boy, I hope the ICE folks who haven't had to deal with this sort of cold before take these tips to heart.
Hey, I want to offer some helpful tips for coping with the cold for ICE folks who might have come from warmer places.

1. Wear cotton socks! Cotton is nice and soft next to your skin and will absorb your sweat so your feet stay warm. Cotton everything but ESPECIALLY socks!
Good morning to fuckers in our neighborhood kidnapping our neighbors! Can you see the city skyline? No? You’re wondering if Minneapolis burned down again overnight? Oh no, sweetie. That’s ice crystals in the air . It looks like it will get to around -8F without windchill! Please enjoy your stay!

“the USPS must turn a profit” makes me want to set things on fire

they put a clause in the fucking constitution about postal service, that’s how important it is

nothing in there about “only if you can make money on it”
🚨SCOOP: Amazon is preparing to sever ties with USPS and expand its shipping network as a true coast-to-coast rival.

It could cost USPS more than *$6 billion* a year in lost revenue, and lead Amazon to dominate yet another facet of the economy.

USPS posted a *$9 billion* loss in 2025.

"Thagomizer" in Japanese is, in fact, サゴマイザー/sagomaizaa, and you can imagine my delight when it dawned on me what the katakana I was reading represented.
Come to think of it, Johnny, what's the Thagomizer called in Japanese?

Public smoking bans just got in under the wire, too. Younger folks might not realize how rare they used to be and how hard they were to enact.
it is MIRACULOUS that we got rid of lead paint and asbestos when we did. if we had tried that today, there would be people whining about how we're restricting their rights.
Bring back residential-use lead paint, you cowards.

1/ Studying 19th Century France, you quickly learn that many people think "Les Misérables" is set in the French Revolution. (It's not.)

For @today.yougov.com, I polled Americans about when they think it's set.

Lots of Not Sures. But 2/3 of those with an opinion say it IS in the French Revolution:

Ever wonder what happens to all of the snow that’s plowed to ensure car drivers have clear streets?

It gets piled at corners/bus stops/ crosswalks for people who 🚶🏻/🦼/🦽/🚌 to contend with.

Not great. Let’s #PlowMPLSsidewalks

(Don’t worry, I walked my bike over these piles, didn’t ride it.)

Two facts:

-Accessibility and walkability are as strong as their weakest links.

-Uncleared sidewalks are a moral statement (even if it is just the curb cuts)

If grandma can't roll over the snow to catch the bus, it isn't good enough.

This a fascinating view of how newspapers functioned nearly 60 years ago. Review a NY play with no #localangle but to inform its readers of what’s happening in the world using language and presenting ideas for an adult, educated audience instead of generating clicks and subscribers.
In 1968 the afternoon newspaper in Minneapolis sent its arts writer to New York to review Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead"

Honestly, not a bad job of justifying why Sumino's actress suddenly changed. Definitely appreciate that they did an in-show explanation for the target audience (kindergarten-age kids) rather than just pretend nothing had happened.
