I hope some of us being honest about being an author/artist etc helps other folks feel a bit *better* in some regards. If you haven't finished that novel, poetry book, film script, music, whatever--we truly understand! Don't beat yourself up. Just keeping bills paid has gotten harder for all of us.

Stories from my bookseller days: A customer would special order a book. One of the staff members would see it when it came in and special order one for themselves. It would become a staff pick. It would become a store bestseller and eventually end up on one of our tables.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I recommend always offering drink options without booze up front. I tend to lead with "we have beer, wine, soda, seltzers ..." and let them tell me what they want without having to decline alcohol in the first place. Also, think ahead about sober friends and try to have some options.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:
Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.
If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.
Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.
