Gord Downie just writing down unusual phrases and sentences he hears in day to day life, knowing that he can string em together and make fucking killer poetic lyrics out of em that people will still be debating decades after he dies.

Shut it down tomorrow, and all that happens is people will find a better way to communicate.
The way the elites around the world talk about X, as if it's a supply of Unobtainium that must be preserved and nurtured, rather than a billionaire's personal 4chan, shows how high they are on their own supply.

The first western nation to permanently ban the X platform will be a hero of democracy.
“If a woman dares to show herself in public in any way, then she can and will be sexually harassed with the aid of genAI-driven tools that can easily turn her face into highly realistic pornography” is an absolute red-alarm human rights disaster
The end goal of Grok sexual harassment is to make women afraid to be visible. It’s a punishment for daring to exist in a way the perpetrators can’t control. There’s no one solution to this, because the problem isn’t just technological. It’s cultural. It’s misogyny. This is just one expression of it.

I am the exact kind of pedantic nerd that would make this kind of argument if it were true, but I am also old enough to have used these. And yes, we just called them floppies. Almost nobody actually said diskette.
there is a woman on TikTok who has been arguing for months now with randos that keep insisting that nobody called 3.5" disks "floppy disks" or "floppies" at the time. it's weird. no matter what kind of proof she provides or how many agree with her, people are coming out of the woodwork to disagree

This is stunning. Listen to this in Philadelphia.

Thousands singing “Hey-Oh, we won’t be silent while our friends are gunned down.”

Really listen to it.

Let us curse the MAGNARP’s evil twin, the TÅGARP. Miserable, cheap lamp. Too tall and flimsy, wobbly, unflattering throw, a bane of apartments everywhere. A lamp that follows you like a generational curse.

Hey folks, just added Dispatch to my Steam Curator page with an extremely enthusiastic thumbs up.

Let me pay this game an astonishing big compliment: Dispatch did for Superhero media what Train To Busan did for zombies for me, and washed away the cynicism.

People are interpreting this as Exxon telling Trump that he made a mistake, but if you listen to what they say, it's basically that the US needs to do more regime change so there are "investment protections".

Chevron, who are already in Venezuela, are planning a production increase already

They won't have the numbers to occupy the nation and force everyone to comply, and that's why they're engaged in such an aggressive show of force. They're hoping we all get cowed into submission and do their work of suppression ourselves.

Once again, no.

The mantra remains "fuck you, make me."

Trump has effectively tried to end run this old problem with a massive surge in ICE agents, but I don't think they're going to get remotely near their goal.

They'll have the help of local cops in some cities, but again, that can only go so far.

Yes, the US government has an infinitely-funded state-of-the-art military that could wage multiple wars around the world.

BUT!

In domestic settings, the law limits where and when that can be deployed and, more important, the inevitable political blowback has led leaders to use it even less often

One of the takeaways of my current book is that the ability of the federal government to exert real power in domestic settings has always been largely overblown.
They don’t have the juice or manpower for it. This is not late 1930s Germany. There is no state monopoly on media. They are wildly unpopular.
The goal here is martial law. It’s martial law. Let’s be clear about that.

ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis or we WILL lock up our own citizens
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says 29 people were arrested in downtown last night during a noise demonstration at a hotel reportedly housing ICE agents: "For those that are taking the bait and causing property damage or otherwise, there are consequences. We're holding the line here all the way."

if you want to know what it is like in minneapolis, I don’t even have to scroll on facebook to find a horror story. it’s basically my whole feed.

everyone i know in minneapolis is seeing ICE take people—at gas stations, taquerias, bus stops, schools. just snatching random people.

Those of you who still insist on drawing a distinction between ICE and police should be aware that the police are not drawing that distinction.
Thank you for telling us you neither serve nor protect. Thank you for saying the quiet part out loud. That was state murder in broad daylight, captured from multiple angles by multiple witnesses, and the people of Minneapolis have eyes.

You support murder.

In the US you can show up to support your neighbors and community and if you try to avoid getting arrested by a federal agent and the agent decides to kill you, the Vice President of the country will go on tv and say you were a left wing agent provocateur and deserved death

How its gotta feel having murdered a mother of three in cold blood in the streets, having the whole thing filmed and scrutinized with your name plastered on it on every news station on the planet, in a country with 47,000 gun deaths annually that now hates your guts.

Every. single. day.
