Since folks are saying promote yr books, I’d like to share a couple of slides of some books that I often show when I give talks — if you’re interested in the history of computing, and its present, you might like these! And yeah my book is on there too🥸

I was a fool, I picked up the phone when my mom called.

Anywho, time to make a pizza and scream into the void because I survived that phone call.

Just spent half an hour scraping ice off my driveway.

It was fun for like the first 12 feet or so when it would break and shatter and then make tinkling noises as it slid across the driveway.

Then it got annoying.

First up: scientists said it couldn't be done. But we put our logo on a scroll, and then got a mouse to hold it while riding a lobster.

The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

Read the whole thread. Everything in it is exactly right. Some types of younger people who ESPECIALLY need a will:

1. Parents of children <18
2. Parents who are married to someone not their child's other parent
3. Unmarried, childless people who wouldn't want their parents or siblings inheriting
This is my yearly PSA that, no matter how old you are, you should have a basic health directive and will. The forms are free online in California. The number of senior citizens in my neighborhood with no directives and no plan who are already a little off the rails is staggering. A short rant 1/

CW: Cancer & menopause rant

So, I had my hepatology appointment today.

To sum it up: "lose 5 to 10 pounds" BECAUSE OF COURSE THAT IS THE FUCKING ANSWER.

I also get to have more lab work and a liver scan for a baseline but still.

Why haven't I thought of savory lefse?!?

It has been a while but I guess I'm making lefse in December.
Leaving Oslo today and I was finally able to find a hot dog on lefse (potato flatbread) with shrimp salad and crispy onions for breakfast at the airport.

Verdict: delicious

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Thread, today in St. Paul, Minnesota raid and attacks by federal agents.

Dana Thiede, KARE11:

"As word spread about the operation unfolding on Rose Ave., neighbors and activists calling themselves 'constitutional observers' streamed in, holding phones in the air to videotape what was unfolding."
Federal agents launch another operation in St. Paul
A witness said the number of agents "just kept growin' and growin' and growin," as did an angry crowd that was eventually sprayed with chemical irritants.

There are many more bad tech products to avoid. But I keep coming back to @hypervisible.blacksky.app and David Golumbia’s concept of luxury surveillance.

We need to really think about the surveillance tech we’re adopting — and certainly that we’re pushing on others.

I get a bit irritated when I see “now they’re coming after disabled people?!” like we didn’t all see that clip in 2015.

They have ALWAYS been coming after disabled people. They use us to stoke fear, to delegitimize the agency of our own and other groups, as scapegoats, as bellwethers, as excuses.
