Exactly this. In fact, with the argument that Denmark is too small to protect Greenland against China or Russia and that is why the U.S. needs to annex the Island, Trump just told everyone openly that he would not defend Denmark (and other NATO partners) unless the relevant country is U.S. property.

This should be obvious to everyone: if Europe backs down and lets the US take Greenland, the transatlantic relationship would no longer be an alliance. Europeans would become dominated American satellites without sovereignty just like EEuropeans were Soviet satellites in the Warsaw Pact years.

Das hat Jens Spahn gerade erst gestern, am Freitag, in der SZ gesagt. Diese Servilität, dieses Sich-in-den-Staub-Werfen der Union vor einem skrupellosen Potentaten ist einfach nur entsetzlich.

Zum Beispiel, wenn es um Grönland geht. Da wird der Fortbestand der Nato infrage gestellt für den Fall, dass Trump Ernst macht.

Das sagt immerhin die dänische Ministerpräsidentin.

Das mag sein. Trotzdem frage ich: Habt ihr das zu Ende gedacht? Ist es wirklich klug, dass wir als Europäer in der Abhängigkeit, in der wir von Amerika sind, diese Debatte jetzt so führen? Und die Antwort ist Nein. Wenn man die Lage Grönlands auf dem Globus anschaut, sind die von den USA gestellten Fragen übrigens nachvollziehbar.

Trump said that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would face the tariff and that it would climb to 25% on June 1 if a deal is not in place for “the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the United States.

I believe handing over entire territories falls well beyond those limits.

US threats to annex Greenland following the attack on Venezuela should be taken seriously. European countries have important leverage they should be prepared to use.

If US judges don't recognize such immunity (or that Maduro is the president of Venezuela) it opens up for other states to act similarly, potentially against US interests.
