One thing I learned over the weekend from talking to finance people is that they assume the AI bubble is going to burst and their issue is figuring out when so they can time their trades right.

While this usually isn't the intent, "no one will ever be held accountable for this" doomerism is an excuse not to try.

There'll be at least some accountability if enough Americans work for it. And this time really is different. Doesn't guarantee the aftermath will be, but it increases the chances.

If wealth was steps, everyone you have ever met is on the first or second step. Your wealthy aunt, that unhoused person, you - the same two steps. King of England? About the 8th step. The likes of Bezos? Their step is at the International Space Station.
In sociology, a recurring methodological problem encountered by those trying to study the very rich is that their domains of existence are so far removed from the experiences of ordinary people that the researchers, before they even start, have to fundamentally reshape their social ontologies
When we talk about "taxing rich people" there's folks who think we're talking about Aunt Edna who has the second summer home. The astronomical levels of "rich" that now exist are almost unfathomable to people. It's the stuff of vast empirical dynasties. We're talking about taxing emperors.

good thread about a bad thing
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

As someone who works in the tech industry--absolutely.

They are testing the waters. These are top-down orders. The ONLY way to stop it is a visceral negative reaction. Write articles. Post your rage. Email. Post. @. All those things.

Only you have the power to kill it.
Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

🧵⬇️
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

I just read my tenth #COVID19 research study in the past month or so that demonstrates COVID infections cause brain changes that may accelerate Alzheimer's disease, are associated with cognitive decline, and cause fatigue, memory impairment, and sleep disorders. (1/?)

One thing I love about writing regular SFF book reviews is it forces me to delve into the wealth and variety of audacious fiction being published right now. Every month I find dozens of fascinating, unique titles and try to read as many as I can.

I wish it were way easier to broaden your horizons.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

But white people in WV vote consistently to cancel the very programs and assistance they depend on.🤦🏿‍♂️
