Had heard rumblings of this but it really is exciting - a lost eighth century Syriac world chronicle which seems to contain among other things an independent source tradition on the Arab Conquests!

Right, another key thing that historians do is working with important records that have not been digitized.

And the vast majority of the world’s records *have not been digitized* and thus do not exist in any format that LLMs/AI can work with.
it's literally impossible for an LLM to do a historian's job

it's not even LLMs sucking it's that they need data input to do anything and where's that data supposed to be coming from without historians

never met a computer that can dig through a thousand year old book in a library

Protectionists always love to talk about what they're doing in terms of how it enriches Americans but in fact it does not, it makes us poorer, and forces us into substitutes we don't like and in fact prefer the variety and abundance

Data: 14% had violent charges, 46% had nonviolent ones

Dokoupil: ICE arrested nearly 400,000 people... Of those, nearly 60% had criminal histories... including many for serious crimes such as drug trafficking & child pornography, and several thousand cases involving rape or murder"

“orders the military to seize ballot boxes” is even more load-bearing; there are more than 116,000 polling locations in the united states, more ballot drop offs, and two states are mail-first, that’s an enormous logistical effort
This would be terrifying if control was actually going to come down to a small number of closer races. But it’s not, and nobody frothing into a panic over it will internalize that load bearing part of the speculation.
Over the past three weeks, the "nightmare scenario" for November's midterms has grown more plausible www.vox.com/politics/478...

I used to think: another case of US leftism being anarchist inflected vs UK leftism being socialist inflected. But subsequently I came to think the bizarre tolerance-of-anti-social-behaviour element of wokeness derives from the fact that too many American social mores are enforced by men with guns.

It's pretty crazy that this book was published in 2006, and the characters suspect that the alien they are talking to in the opening is an LLM in a sense more or less recognizable to anyone reading it today.
competitive advantage for the LLM era: went insane reading Blindsight a decade ago; confronted the fact that much of what we value as intelligence can be decomposed into component submodules; accepted that sentience/consciousness was not a precondition of effectiveness wrt many cognitive tasks, etc

This is such a bonkers misstatement of the law by Pam Bondi’s terminally online deputy that I really hope this judge-appointed U.S. attorney challenges this.

Yes, Congress has allowed Article III judges to appoint U.S. attorneys, and yes, the Constitution explicitly contemplates this possibility.

You really want to get angry?

You know that meme that says AIPAC donated 9M to Harris that they like to throw around?

Well, the actual amount AIPAC donated to Harris was $0.

She didn't get a dime from them.

They just decided that Jstreet and DMFI were the same as AIPAC.
So in case anyone doubted, trackAIPAC really should just be called TrackJewish, because to them all donations from Jewish groups are the same.

So all of you who believed them out of hand - you got conned.
The Track AIPAC website is purposely misleading. If you bothered to look around the website to the breakdown of funds you'd find this. No AIPAC. also the official AIPAC website says they never endorsed her.

JAC PAC = Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs

JAC PAC supports a 2-state solution; I assume they oppose Israeli settlements in WB/Gaza, though I can't find anything specific about that seeing how they focus on helping push PROGRESSIVE DOMESTIC U.S. POLICIES.

JAC is dedicated to strong US-Israel relations, combatting antisemitism, protecting reproductive rights, and gun violence prevention.

lol that the NYT’s reputation is so far in the toilet that they have a dumbass rapid response account to argue with people now
The Times's coverage of Feb. 3 and 4 accurately reported the public statements of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Medical Association. Our reporting also accurately contextualized the shift from both of these organizations regarding gender-related surgical procedures.
