Realizing that part of the reason universities’ uncritical pushing AI into everything bothers me is that it is partly related to how little our institutions care about the humanities. Tech that might work in (some) fields does not need to be force fed to all of us. But who listens to us?

The advice I give young people on choice of degree programme. Choose something you love. You’ve got the rest of your life to be frustrated and miserable.

This is terrifying!

ICE breaks into this woman’s car in the pick-up line at West Loop Elementary school in Chicago and detains her before she can pick her kids up from school. (They were eventually let go after showing their documents)

This is Trump’s America.

The Nobel Prize being awarded to László Krasznahorkai is by far the best bit of news I've heard for an age. The opposite of cosy genre writing. A real thinker. An experimentalist. Every sentence on the edge of something new & unsaid. Original, discomforting, brilliant.

This collaborative PhD project with the LSE and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on Planting Decolonization: Plantation Science and Empire in the Twentieth Century, sounds amazing.

I’m sure many of you might be interested.

'“It’s a strange mixture of feelings,” he said. “Being happy, being stressed, sometimes being overwhelmed. Living in Gaza for 27 years, then getting here and being in London, it’s completely shocking. The very basic things here are luxuries in Gaza.”'

This makes me so angry. These people view all life as training for lifelong servitude/work. There's no room for interest, enjoyment, and culture in their bleak vision of education. At least she'll never be in power to see it through. Though Reform are probably worse.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.

A Rutgers professor has been forced to flee the country for his safety, after targeting by a far-right student group that was *checks notes* claiming they felt unsafe.

I'm horrified.
I'm angry.

FWIW, this is the best book on how Handsworth came together as a multicultural community in the 1960s and 1970s in the context of overtly racist government policies. Brilliant sociological study of resilience.

Awful news from Wales, the St Fagan's Museum has been broken into and prehistoric goldwork has been taken. Its painful to think what objects might now be at risk. Thoughts with the museum team who must be devastated, all speed to the police and a curse on the crooks.

A long shot: does anyone have an image of Iseult Gonne’s signature?

I acquired a 1930s book signed “Iseult” on the flyleaf and, as it’s an uncommon name, wondered if it had been hers.

The protests are on one block. Nothing is burning down. His justification for sending in troops is all based on lies.

A student in my publishing course is interested in researching book pulping and book recycling. Do we know any work or introductory material in this area?

(Work on remainders, print runs, supply chain, raw materials all relevant, too.)

Reading MacDiarmid's A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle again. It was published 100 years ago next year. Kenneth Buthlay's annotated edition from 1987, published by @asls.org.uk, remains the best guide. The poem itself is as thrilling, ambitious and flawed as ever it was.

When I turned 30 I had not yet written my first published book or my first published novel and did not know (or know of) some of the most important people in my life. I didn't know how much my life could still change, and did, after the age of 30. There is so much your life still yet to live.

RIP Pat Fish, who died four years ago today

Six years ago, one of Pat’s first performances of this song, which transfixed me when I heard it a few months later at the Lexington. I love how the lyric plays on different senses of not knowing someone. #thejazzbutcher
