The way to reconcile this is their aspiration was always to put down a slave revolt, not fight in one. bsky.app/profile/osit...
We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

Oh lord, the training people are back. Maybe they should learn to pistol whip people more effectively? Maybe they should execute people in a more polite way?

I don't think the US is the ethically worst country to host the World Cup but it actually is likely the most dangerous for fans to travel to. Sportswashing regimes at least have incentive to treat sports fans well - the US on the other hand is addicted to performative cruelty to travelers!

A decade of trans advocacy has taught me people believe lies because they want to, not because they don't know they are lies. They believe trans people will regret our transition because they want us to regret our transition. They believe we are a "social contagion" because that is how they see us

The grimness of US history should encourage us. Yes, people used to send lynching postcards. And other people saw that, worked towards building a more just society anyway, and succeeded beyond anyone's wildest imagination. There's more work to be done. What's our excuse for choosing despair instead?
I understand and appreciate the fact that for some it is genuinely uncomfortable and distracting to think about how grim US history is. yes, that is strategically relevant, and no, I wouldn't put "did you know people used to send lynching photos to each other as postcards?" on a recruitment flyer

ONLY on Assigned Media: Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have accused the regime of genocide. Some of the most vulnerable are trans.

Crack reporter @mollyquell.bsky.social comes to us from The Hague to report on trans oppression as part of the ethnic cleansing of Myanmar.
Trans Victims Fight for Rohingya Justice in The Hague — Assigned
Targeted for rape and harrassment, visibly trans members of Myanmar's Rohingya ethnic group are among the most vulnerable victims of the regime.

People really don’t understand how bad Minnesota is at this point. The news is openly discussing the federal plans to use old Amazon prime facilities in places like Woodbury and other suburbs as fascist detention centers.

We are fully through the glass and people need to fully take in that reality

this was also consensus opinion for center-right types after george floyd’s murder five years ago. the state media apparatus will be working overtime the next few weeks to reprogram them
Really worth watching this interview with a bystander who witnessed the ICE shooting in Minneapolis: "I'm pretty right-leaning. But seeing this, this is not how we're supposed to be doing things in America.”

I truly believe this country would be in much better shape if the general public had this “we must destroy them” attitude about CEOs of companies that do wage theft and mass layoffs-offs instead of consenting adults who got caught violating a corporate fraternization policy.
She's taking responsibility and has been removed from her job. If you heard this story from a friend ("omg I canoodled with my boss at a Coldplay concert last night") rather than seeing it on TikTok you wouldn't feel the need to cast her as some world-historical villain.

We are living through the darkest comedy.
David Brooks writing about how there was nothing to see with the Epstein Files while not disclosing *he was in them* is at least a Nuzzi-level journalistic scandal

What I'm saying is, get ready to see a nude painting of David Brooks in the NYT within weeks

Today, I spoke with Kilmar Abrego Garcia and his wife, Jennifer. In April, when I met with him in El Salvador, Trump said he would never set foot in the U.S. again.

This case has never been about one man alone; if the govt can violate the constitutional rights of one, all our rights are threatened.

If every Muslim voter in Dearborn voted for Harris, she still would have lost Michigan.

If she had won Michigan, she STILL WOULD HAVE LOST THE ELECTION.

If you want to blame voters for current conditions, feel free to blame the actual demographic responsible for Trump and that is WHITE PEOPLE.

Israel hunted a 70 year old lady down with a gun drone and then hoovered above to make sure she bled out next to her dying son. They both join almost 1,000 Palestinians Israel has massacred or maimed in its genocide during the "ceasefire".

The thing about DOGE is it accomplished neither its ostensible nor actual goals but did manage to cause a couple of holocausts worth of deaths internationally.

And the media finds none of those three things particularly notable.
It remains insane to me that DOGE was treated at the time as an impressive shock and awe accomplishment - “you can’t deny he’s getting stuff done!” - and then instantly memory holed by the press once if became clear it was a total failure by every possible standard including Musk’s own
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

Weird how re-inventing the taxi cab didn't do much but shift power and resources even farther away from the people doing the real labor.
Remember all the hype about how Uber and Lyft would allow people to live car-free?

Well, it turns out ridehail has no discernible impact on car ownership at all.

We've had nonstop op-eds declaring that "Americans have spoken" and demanding Democratic capitulation to the right despite the right's agenda being wildly unpopular.
This has gotten lost: Abigail Spanberger won big after vowing to RESCIND Glenn Youngkin's executive order directing local cooperation with ICE and voting AGAINST the anti-immigrant Laken Riley Act. Yet she gained bigly with working class.
