OK all this Epstein and Trump stuff sounds bad, but you have to remember the other option was a black woman with a weird laugh, so can you really get that upset with the voters?

A real athlete would show how well they can do in their specific sport, even if the financial awards are minimal. A failure-turned-grifter does this
Fun fact: The US pays Olympic Swimmers an annual stipend of $40k and an additional $37.5k per gold medal earned at the Olympics. Last year this fifth-place collegiate swimmer made more than Michael Phelps did at the height of his career before his endorsements, all for the low price of spewing hate.
NEW: Riley Gaines, the former collegiate swimmer turned right-wing media figure, made $474,313 last year from the conservative nonprofit org, the Leadership Institute. More striking than her total comp was the way it was structured.

This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.

Reform’s limit is 25%. That’s nowhere close to being a win in a General Election
YouGov have Reform on 25% in both their first poll of 2025 and their final poll before Christmas. The only significan sustained gain across 2025 was Green Party +7, at expense of Labour

Reform 25% tp 25% (-)
Labour 26% to 20% (-6)
Cons 22% to 19% (-3)
LibDems 14% to 15% (+1)
Greens 8% to 15% (+7)

I really hope that the Starmer leadership do not change their minds on Brexit [SM/CU/Rejoin]. It would re-toxify the mission to rejoin de jure or de facto. Much better and more credible for a new leadership to ditch the old red lines and admit that we could not 'make Brexit work'.

... But that would mean they'd actually want it to occur, instead of looking for excuses to stop it...
If this is the case, ministers could jointly make a policy decision that this is a tram - and thus help speed up its delivery again.

There is no law that I am aware of which says alternative modes of transport must be considered.

Civil servants could turn mayor's West Yorkshire tram plan into bus network
Civil servants could overrule mayor Tracy Brabin and turn the proposed West Yorkshire mass transit system into a bus network, The Yorkshire Post understands.

TIL that roast veggies were unknown in the US until the early-90s 🤨🤨🤨
This sounds like a shitpost, but there was a 1993 NYT article about the novel technique of roasting instead of boiling vegetables

Starmer has manouevred himself into a position where he looks naive and weak towards Trump whereas those across the political spectrum from the Greens to LibDems to even some pre-2016 Tories asking how the UK can prepare for a post-American world look like the realists.

I think the best way to explain the X vs Bluesky preference is whether a person thinks the left is more annoying than the right is dangerous.

The reason so many Noah Smiths end up on the X side of that equation is that while the left annoys them personally, the right mostly endangers other people.
