My favorite historical costume designer is Sandy Powell, and she has an amazing trick that it took me years to realize: Be conservative with color and lean into modern shapes with your hero, and put your villain in the most outrageously period-specific costume you can.

"I had planned to send [the children] to boarding school, since their education at the moment seems to consist mostly of marching around Salzburg singing scales. I think it would have been particularly helpful for the eldest daughter, who seems intent on losing her virginity to the mailman."

‘Buddo’ - a rare representation of a human figure from the British Neolithic, dating to around 2900-2400 BC. Discovered at Skara Brae in the mid-C19th, it was re-discovered amongst the archaeological collections at Stromness Museum in 2016. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday#Archaeology

I compared it to a rock that has been eroded by rain in a pattern that resembles a human face. There is no face, and no reference to a face, except through your mind's association of the shape of the rock with a human face. An LLM output is the same but with words.
One of the more successful ways of explaining it was to describe LLM language outputs as a marvellous optical illusion, and our ability to parse them as having meaning a testament to the complexity of both the LLMs statistical sophistication and our brains' capacity to decode meanings

Talked to boomers about AI/LLMs and the fact that by its nature an LLM cannot account for an external material reality to which its outputs refer and that the full scope of meaning contained by a word isn't something that can be represented computationally is actually quite hard for them to grasp

the difference between science fiction and fantasy is that science fiction is about magic and the mystical and emotions whereas fantasy is about hard mathematical science and rules and stat systems

They are running the government according to the logic of right-wing grievance media. I cannot emphasize that enough. The point is to create content, and they don't see an actual difference between dunking on Sabrina Carpenter, passing legislation, and bombing other countries.
I don't really know what the administration hopes to gain by picking fights with the most well-liked pop artists in the United States. You're just generating backlash for no discernible reason outside of owning the libs.

For them, the action (owning the libs) *is* the juice (political accomplishment)
