My first language was German. Now my command of French and English might be better than that of German. But I still feel strongly that the real name of things is the German name. Weirdly, sometimes I feel the real word is the Italian word (maybe too much Latin in school).

In any case, the Hauberk papers were more exciting (for me professionally).

No, John Gurdon, who just died (left), didn’t clone a sheep! Rather, he was dramatically ahead of his time.

In the playing style of Claudio Colombo there is something that makes music music that is missing. But it is also fascinating and weirdly addictive.

C'est légal pour la direction d'un institut de demander aux employés prévoyant de faire la grève de s'auto-déclarer?

Right, we should have fewer Dirac and more lecturers who are chosen for their ability to make you feel good.

"That was not a question, it was a statement" said the famous physicist Paul Dirac after a long silence, in a lecture, when a student said to him, "I don't understand that equation".
That was a hundred years ago and not enough has changed since then in our 'welcoming' culture in science..

The word “autism” was first used to describe behavioral differences in children in 1911 but autism has been documented using available records going back to the 1700s (definitively) and further.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) was discovered in 1878 and first sold in the United States in 1950.

I’m thinking that universities could save money by relieving faculty of their duties and focusing on the important things. Semi-pro sports, semi-pro sorority rush, and allowing students to segregate themselves into “exclusive” clubs for the purpose of networking after college.

Any journalist or commentator who writes a wrap-up of this speech that suggests that any of it was normal, worthy of respect, not absolutely deranged, not an insult to the audience, not an embarrassment for the US, should be relieved of their jobs.

Agreed. But I also knew there were no trucks circling Iraqi deserts while making weapon-grade anthrax.

As the brother of an autistic American, as a person who worked on US scientific integrity policy at the White House, and as human being, I'm boiling at the RFK idiocy. And though I have little to offer beyond surpassing rage and national shame, I did smile at this statement from NYU's Arthur Caplan:

My inbox is already lighting up. Arthur Caplan, the founding head of the division of medical ethics at N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine, wrote: “The announcement on autism was the saddest display of a lack of evidence, rumors, recyling old myths, lousy advice, outright lies and dangerous advice I have ever witnessed by anyone in authority in the world claiming to know anything about science.”

Jimmy Kimmel isn't returning to the airwaves because of "thoughtful conversations" with Disney executives.

He's back because consumers sent Disney a clear message: selling out our fundamental rights is not an acceptable cost of doing business.

I meant it’s music that I’m still capable of appreciating because I was there when the albums appeared in the shops. I don’t think I could deal with neo-zep 😄.

Universal childcare wouldn't just relieve working families of a massive cost burden. It improves the whole economy.

"There are a lot of reasons building a child care system that works for everyone is important to our children, to parents, to employers and to economic growth."

Whether they're blaming vaccines and Tylenol, or selling dubious "remedies," what they're really doing is promoting the perception that families (and especially mothers) can prevent and treat Autism. And thus also the perception that people with Autism and their families don't need social support.
