I read a bad review of HBOs Task somewhere and wrote it off, but it turned out to be one of the most gripping series I’ve ever seen. Deep characters and storylines., every character is interesting and the writing and acting are off the charts great. Highly recommend
So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

Those indicators are the difference between “the vehicle moved” and “the vehicle was used as the weapon.” If they are not present, certainty about intent is not analysis, it is narrative management. 6/7
To ring in the new year, I'm excited to announce the launch of the Politics of Education Lab (PEdL) at the Stanford GSE. The goal is to advance understanding of the political dimensions of education policymaking to help policymakers and practitioners strengthen school systems.

Most Tennessee public school students who use Education Savings Account vouchers aren’t leaving low-performing public schools, while ESA students overall are underperforming their public school peers in both academic achievement and growth. From @itsmelissabrown.bsky.social with @chalkbeat.org.

"[Cuba] is run by incompetent, senile men"

This press conference keeps emphasizing how the Maduros were "indicted". Donald Trump was indicted in four separate (and extremely serious) criminal cases on a total of 88 counts. He avoided most of these only because of the election.
It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Can we please just have a peaceful, restorative Saturday morning?

Looking forward to being a panelist at the LEARN symposium in Nashville, during the AASA National Conference on Education (golearntoday.org). LEARN connects education leaders to research to help them identify evidence-based strategies and solutions to enhance learning environments.

I also got this "reminder" - must have gone out widely!

“Beethoven wasn’t so great! … He never got his picture on bubblegum cards, did he?”

Apparently he hasn’t seen Jared Kushner’s plans for luxury waterfront condominiums and high speed rail there
Pope Leo decried conditions for Palestinians in Gaza in his Christmas sermon on Thursday, in an unusually direct appeal during what is normally a solemn, spiritual service on the day Christians across the globe celebrate the birth of Jesus. For @reuters.com:

We need your help to see the full picture of how the dismantling of the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights is affecting students, parents, school employees and their wider communities.

Also of note: at least 18,000 of the 20,000 vouchers were used at religious private schools, and most counties have few or no voucher students. (3/3) www.tennessean.com/story/news/e...

Also interesting to note that a handful of schools each enrolled >580 voucher students (that's >$4m each and a lot for an ostensibly statewide program). One school with a minimum tuition of $18k had 325 voucher students ($2.37m). Your tax dollars at work! (2/3)

Good lord

Here it is!

I’ve never been to Ann Arbor and can safely say this is not the picture I had in my head

It’s the top story in my NYT app!

This makes me physically ill. We cant have affordable healthcare in this country (much less high speed rail) but can fund a plan to build luxury high rises and fast trains to bomb-devastated Gaza? For whom? Surely not the victims of this atrocity. www.wsj.com/world/middle...

Hey #econsky! I'm organizing a workshop at Brown this Spring in partnership with Eric Nielsen and Viviana Rodriguez.

The topic is educational measurement. Please submit a paper/extended abstract! We'd love to consider your work.

And please help us spread the word to folks who aren't on bluesky!

You will be visited by three spirits (but it will all be a big misunderstanding)
