I see this repeated a lot but it's not right. These people need to believe the protesters are paid because they've bought into a worldview where the only people who *actually* oppose them are shadowy elites and their acolytes. If "real Americans" oppose them sincerely, their worldview collapses.
You hear this a lot obviously from conservatives or “non political” types whenever a protest happens and it’s really borne out of their deep lack of convictions and cowardice. They can’t possibly believe that other people could actually believe things or could care about something
