I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Seeing the replies and the discussions on this issue, the realisation that writing is extremely unlikely to get me out of the rat race is hitting me like a punch to the liver.
I mean, I'll still write my garbage. But man. That sucks on ice

my income is only books and another similar art in a different field, but definitely no day job, so this does not apply to me, but i think my trot is to acknowledge that this is very very rare and that while talent and persistence matter the most important factor of me being here is luck
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I know I banged on about this yesterday and I know it pisses a lot of people off when I advocate for my career. But it's not just about the money. In the attention economy where everyone is fighting to get noticed by the algorithm, stealing a book actively pushes it down in the algorithm >
I do feel like people love to steal from authors more than they do from most other creatives. People tend to keep their heads down and have the decency to feel bad about pirating from musicians, but there are people almost proud of stealing the work from authors
People who pirate books: “I just think art and literature should be FREE to everyone!”
