Personally I have difficulty with their habit of punishing their female members for admitting that their male leaders have raped them. Demanding the banking information of members they regard as insubordinate. Etc.

No, you do not have to hand it to Tucker Carlson, MTG, or any white supremacist who suddenly found compassion for Palestinian children

In Beita, Israeli settlers, with the support of soldiers, attacked Palestinian olive harvesters. The settlers fired live bullets and burned four vehicles. Several Palestinians were injured by live gunfire, stones, and beatings. Soldiers also fired live ammunition and tear gas at the villagers.

Lexis loves sending me emails about how their AI is hallucination-free and I love not believing them because they’re liars.
lawzag.bsky.social
The problem is that both Lexis and Westlaw AI have relatively high instances of hallucinations as well. (note, Westlaw AI answers are about twice as long as Lexis answers, so more words = more chances for the AI to mess up in an answer)

Like we’re pretty good at this over the course of a book, I think (cp, all the lesbians on tumblr announcing they just LOVE Dulcinea Septimus and then finishing the novel) but a lot of serialized media lets people dig trenches before they know the ground they’re standing on and then people get mad.

The Arab Spring really was a key, decisive event in world politics: it demonstrated to corrupt authoritarian regimes that they needed to move decisively to ramp up surveillance and crack down on dissent to prop up their control. And I do not mean “only authoritarians in the Middle East”.

Saudi Arabia's investment in Twitter boosted its influence while being used at home to silence regime critics. "They're surveillance states. They're police states.
They want to use the latest tech to stay in power and surveil their populations."

People should be allowed to be comfortable saying “I love the initial vision I had of this guy, which is distinct from the fuller picture we got later,” instead of being socially obliged to keep their self-image handcuffed to a fictional person.

Way too much of the internet is white supremacists being cozy and cute and reassuring for clout before they slip in their little line about “cities” or “modern life” or “them” and then go back to showing you pretty things.

Sometimes the story was always going to go that way and that’s who the character always was, and maybe you didn’t see it because you missed a clue or it was concealed for narrative reasons, and that is okay either way, but it doesn’t make the story wrong and bad.

— but specifically the thing he cites about the people on Foundation forums being furious about a character doing something unforgivable I think is something that fandom culture should do some soul-searching around. Sometimes it’s not that the writers betrayed your fav, or you.

I think this has multiple causes — the big one I see is the attention economy (too many things demand your time, for reasons of virtue or social connection or just survival, that you don’t have time to adequately process anything and need the quick version) —

To be honest if my twitter experience is anything to go by, probably so many “but I just agree with him about art” viewers have happily clicked on his bullshit that the algorithmic connection may well be organic. 😞

This is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and considered to be the first person to write a computer programme which was for Babbage's Analytical Machine. She died in 1842
In her honour, today is Ada Lovelace Day and is all about encouraging women and girls in mathematics, science and engineering.

Posted to the Southern Reach Reddit...
Southern Reach told me Area X keep eatinh his expeditions so I asked how many expeditions he has and he said he just goes to the shelter and gets a new expeditions afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding expeditions to Area X and then his daughter started crying.
