We describe the very important equity project of the Red Line Extension that will bring important benefits to the majority Black South Side but explain that future time benefits do not fully repair harms from decades of waiting. We draw from 132 interviews on the far South Side of Chicago.
🌍 NEW in Special Issue "Urban Transport as a Social Construct"

✍️ @kateontransport.bsky.social, @ansonstewart.com & G. Purifoye examine people’s experiences of #transit in #Chicago, including waiting and transfers, and how they connect to other parts of their lives.

I wonder if the use of "they" could lead to different understandings. I didn't read "they" as the local government, but rather federal funding choices (since DHS is funding the conversions of these).
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Happy Valentine's Day! Spaulding says to celebrate and spread love in all its forms!

This elitist view that only rich/Ivy/private school kids should study/have access the liberal arts is so deeply ingrained in so many highly educated Democrats’ views (including tons who majored in the lib arts themselves) that they don’t even realize they hold it, let alone how ugly & elitist it is
(3) But the Democrat view is also bad: while it's fine for people at Princeton and Harvard to study Latin and Sanskrit, public higher education is about job training and $ ROI. There is no room for the idea that curiosity-driven inquiry is a good that should be supported by the public.
Given that the administration has stopped trying to defend their EO pushing for more segregation, feels like VT powers that be just want to do this

Does your university use ChatGPT Edu? Please send me a DM if you do. I have identified a potential data breach affecting students' data that has not yet been fixed and I'm trying to compile further examples from other universities.

Reposts appreciated!

Looking to large language models (tried on existing content and with inbuilt biases) which are predictive to generate drafts under "creativity" a suggestion by a university. Frustrating to see university admin types once again falling for hype peddled by private sector "innovators"
Nothing to see here other than a university telling its research community that AI can appropriately be used to "generate first drafts."

More people should listen to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social

When people say AI is inevitable, let them know the future isn’t settled.

These are powerful, important statements. Other D leaders must grapple with the seriousness of where we're at & do more to obstruct and then dismantle facsism and white supremacy. So grateful to have Rep Ramirez as my congressperson speaking truth! Follow her lead!
Rep. Delia Ramirez to DHS officials: "I have as much respect for you as I do for the last white men who put on masks to terrorize communities of color. I have no respect for the inheritors of the Klanhood and the slave patrol. Those activities were criminal and so are yours."

Ald. Ramirez is a progressive, more CTU- and Brandon-friendly than her detractors. Urban Center has done mass texts and sent press releases to TV stations in support of the anti-Archer project / anti-Ramirez rallies. So this isn't about blue collar vs. elites. It's centrists vs. progressives. (9/X)
NEW: The “centrist” Abundance think tank pushing Democrats toward deregulation is run by a registered corporate lobbyist for OpenAI, Larry Ellison’s Oracle, and a crypto think tank.

Congratulations to UPPSA for organizing an amazing firm crawl! Grateful to be @uiccuppa.bsky.social faculty and work with these amazing leaders.

The underfunding of social infrastructure has also led the philanthropic/nonprofit sector in the US to grow to fill in the gaps. And while supporting that sector might seem like a way for privileged people to do good with their money, it gives privileged people huge power over that sector, as well.

Thanks for posting. It's a reality check (amid the other academics in the file release) for academia.

I think I may feel similarly?... I am troubled but can imagine wise folks suggesting this is not surprising?

Wow. When the apology might be even more problematic than the original (problematic) comment.

Satisfying read...I'm tired of the conventional wisdom that the left needs to moderate to win as the right shifts further into fascism. This piece explains that centrism no longer means winning (and can feel like pandering).
This @bostonreview.bsky.social piece by @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social is an absolute must-read, as are many of the responses to it.

Spread this one far and wide.
How Not to Defeat Authoritarianism
Moderation used to help Democrats win, but its advantages now have been greatly exaggerated.

We didn't say body cams on ICE. Their murders are already on video. We said no more ICE.
hindsight is 20/20 but maybe selecting university presidents on their willingness to debase themselves for private donor money is related to the current difficulties in defending academia from fascism
The arrests of Don Lemon, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lundy are unacceptable and a clear violation of the Constitution.

This is a dangerous abuse of power that threatens the rights of every single American.

They must be released immediately.
