One thing I have no patience for is "there is nothing to be thankful for" doomerism. If Americans were finding things to be thankful for in 1863, two and a half years into a bloody Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln formalized the Thanksgiving holiday, then I can find things to be thankful for too.

“prison abolition” in terms of like, “have something basically unrecognizable compared to american corrections” seems fine to me—the problem is just overdoing the language to sound radical. I think that’s where people started, and then negatively polarized themselves into much dumber positions
the thing about the prisonculture story is that she gives herself the simplest possible problem -- "a despised outsider in a society with no deviance immediately confesses to a murder and raises no justification" -- then whiffs the response by torturing the perpetrator and saves them by fiat.

Really wish more people understood this. Having to interact with the awful guy with more authority than you isn't a betrayal *or* some 3D chess move, it's just a necessity if you want to do your job effectively, and that's as true for progressive politicians as it is for liberal ones.
A simpler and more plausible explanation for the meeting is tactical: The federal government can make things difficult for NYC in many ways, and if the new mayor is going to deliver on his agenda he needs to try to limit how much Trump is actively trying to wreck it.
