it honestly just makes me so mad that a handful of greedy assholes have stolen all the creative work of every human being and all the wonderful and weird things people did on the internet and are now using it to take our jobs and make the internet a shitty wasteland

1994: internet is ephemeral

2004: internet is forever

2014: only internet is forever. Print pubs and owning physical media are for idiots

2024: your favorite shows have been removed for tax breaks and private equity firms bought up the websites you worked for and deleted your entire life's work

We are poisoning ourselves: this, the fake 'this mushroom is safe to eat' books, the false obituaries; it makes me feel slightly detached from reality.
Rather insane thing that happened: someone emailed me asking for a link to my TedX talk, which they remembered but could no longer find.

When I wrote back to say I had never done a TedX talk, they replied with an extensive summary of this non-existent talk, generated by ChatGPT, offered as proof.

As always, the thing about AI isn't that it's good enough to replace humans (because it's patently not, despite what they try to tell you), it's that the people holding the purse strings believe it is good enough to save them the money they pay the humans.

a lot of authors have started writing in the defensive crouch induced by social media, where the fear of being misread causes them to write less interestingly. this is bad and they should stop it. people will always misread, because lots of people are dumb, badly taught, or reading in bad faith
It drives me nuts from the other direction because I’ve been annoyed at multiple books lately because they Kept Hammering the Same Point Over and Over and I’m eventually going “are you writing this for very dim people?”

Today the Irish Examiner published my piece about the hellscape of platform manipulation and spam that is the modern web. In it, I highlighted that such actions materially benefit Twitter.

Now, for the first time in 14 years, I've been suspended by Twitter. For "platform manipulation and spam".

You can see that on Upwork every day where previous translation jobs turned into editing the AI translated stuff, for a fraction of the money, needless to say.
This sort of charade does serve a purpose, other than publicity, whether it means to or not: sustain the illusion of superfunctional AI for long enough to ensure everyone on the creative side of creative industries loses their job & can be rehired for peanuts on zero hours as a “content generator”
So it turns out the George Carlin special wasn't written by Ai, and was written in its entirety by Chad Kultgen.

I know that sadly some folks are being forced to learn how to be criminals for the first time so here's some advice from someone who grew up around crime:

No phonecalls
No paper trails
No digital footprints

You make your plans face to face in private locations, no exceptions
If you are gonna travel out of state to have an abortion, DO NOT make plans/arrangements on FB or Messenger. They’ll notify the police.

Elon Musk is an evil man who fractured a vital information resource during disasters - and the world is now scrambling to replace the dependence it developed for over a decade on a service run by a private company.
It's hardly the most important thing here, but the disaster in Ishikawa is a tangible reason why Elon's management of Twitter is such a problem...in Japan especially, Twitter has been a source of real-time news, esp in situations like this, and now it's a vanity project for a white supremacist

thisthisthisthis. People confusing ChatGPT with a knowledge database instead of a text generator is absolutely annoying already, but with that kind of input, things can (and honestly probably will) get a lot darker.
What's scary here is how this will effectively shift ChatGPT/Bing output on current topics to the right while people will still think it's objective because Mr. Computer is 'unbiased' - that's far more of a problem than Musk making his AI talk like some edgy dork out of a 90ies Kevin Smith movie
»ChatGPT will gain access to to content from Axel Springer publishers, including German outlets such as Bild and Welt and American outlets such as Politico and Business Insider, that it can use for real-time news summaries and to help train its large language models.« What could possibly go wrong?

it's just going to be a series of studies forever that *surprise* *whoa* find out it's a great thing and it works, and everyone will say that'd be fantastic and then just kinda let it fade away until they decide to try the next test study
The results from the world’s largest Universal Basic Income study are now in. Findings:

“A monthly UBI empowered recipients and did not create idleness. They invested, became more entrepreneurial, and earned more. The common concern of “laziness” never materialized.”
Early findings from the world’s largest UBI study | GiveDirectly
Money always helps, but for the poorest, one large lump sum can last a long time. A long-term universal basic income also looks promising.

Shitty people have realized that the former Twitter isn't a place where they can have "fun" anymore, so they're going to where they can antagonize others. "Don't Engage, Just Block" is a good first step here. And don't wait for them to be shitty to you, block 'em when they're shitty to others.

Be kind, listen, give the benefit of doubt, but block anyone who is a dick to you or anyone you know.

Pre-emptively block bigots.

Try to use Alt-text when you can.

Share good news.

Don't take shit off fools (It only encourages them, and they're not looking to change).
