I know people hate Will Stancil, but this is simply objectively true.

The democratic socialist future is not piecemeal private mutual aid, it's sufficient taxation and spending to sustain the state capacity to bureaucratically ensure that no American goes hungry, homeless, or without health care.
Guys I know you’re all going to yell at me here but mutual aid is not meaningfully distinct from the kind of privatized community charity system where poor people go to the church and hope someone has donated a hot meal. It’s not progressive, it’s not effective, it’s not good service provision.
"poor enough to need mutual aid"

Everyone needs mutual aid.

Forget even prosecuted. The party will NOT defund ICE. And most of their voters will be fine with this if they return to power. I don't think this is defeatist in the least. To me, it's reality. You would expect to see something different right now if they were going to act differently in power.
We shouldn’t be doomer defeatists about these things, but we also shouldn’t go in ignorant. These ICE thugs tearing families apart are more likely to remain in their jobs than be prosecuted based on everything we know about the Democratic Party.

The thing that is specifically resonant about the 60 MINUTES incident is how many online versions of the report were recorded on cell phones etc, similar to how Soviet samizdat were often printed on illicit homemade or obsolete presses, lending them a characteristic janky print quality.
I kept seeing people use the word samizdat to refer to the Canadian sourcing of the 60 Minutes report on CECOT pulled by Bari Weiss. Here's the definition from Merriam-Webster:

“Grace periods” for late-arriving mail ballots were not controversial until very recently. (Kansas lawmakers voted *163-1* for a grace period in 2017!)

But Trump wants them banned, so red states have lately rushed to help him. Ohio just joined the list:

Ohio Bans Grace Periods for Mail Ballots, Fulfilling Trump’s Wishes - Bolts
Ohio is the fourth GOP-run state this year to ban ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive after. A Supreme Court case could force that policy nationwide next year.

Imagine interviewing a victim of torture and independently confirming the details of his torture and then being told you can’t broadcast it because the people who ordered the torture wouldn’t give their side of the story.

It’s great that 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi is coming right out swinging. Not having a second of this bullshit!

I think coddled hacks like Bari Weiss have no idea what to do with righteous fury like this except, if anything, somehow play victim. Let’s see!
Again, from Michael Grynbaum, here is Sharyn Alfonsi's full email.

It must be read:

This to me is the biggest issue. These men spoke at grave risks to their own safety about being beaten, raped, and tortured at the order of the President of the United States. All of Weiss's odes to free speech and "dangerous ideas" is and has always been horseshit

Rep. Ro Khanna says the Trump DOJ's production "does not comply with" the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Khanna says he and Rep. Thomas Massie "are exploring all options" — including impeachment of DOJ officials, inherent contempt, or referring individuals for obstruction of justice.

Democratic candidates have already burned 57% of what they raised just to raise it.

One factor to consider is workers’ compensation claims. Employees injured on the job typically have a right to compensation. Plus, it’s generally illegal to fire someone for filing a claim. But, it’s not illegal to fire someone if they violate employer policy…
Every minimum wage job I ever had demanded a drug test

When I eventually figured my shit out and went back to college, the internship for a newspaper required a drug and alcohol test so sensitive they told you not to eat poppy seeds for a week beforehand

Why would a political writer keep arguing that Dems should go along with Trump’s harsh immigration crackdown, cruelty to trans people, and climate change-worsening stances as politically necessary, no matter what public opinion data shows?

One logical answer is the writer agrees with those stances.
matt & co’s theory of how public opinion on immigration would respond to new information was simply empirically wrong.
at this point the only reasonable conclusion is they refuse to update their priors w/ new data because the data is inconvenient for them

Yglesias referring to Senator Van Hollen as a "safe seat clout-chaser" is so despicable. VH took a stand to prevent Abrego García - an innocent man - from being disappeared into CECOT for life.

The good news is that we don't need to read the report. Voters hate the party and we hate the leadership. The country is literally coming apart at the seams and we blame you. Entirely. Hide all you want, we know who's at fault. And we know who the consultants are. You're fucked. I promise.
BREAKING: The Democratic National Committee will NOT release its long-awaited autopsy on Trump's 2024 win. The report is completed but Dem leaders decided it could distract from their winning streak, so it will remain secret. Not good.

Instead of addressing the real problems facing families, Republicans are inserting themselves between families and their doctors as they make the most personal and private decisions. I will never back down from fighting this sick and calculated attempt to erase trans Americans.
Under the proposed rule issued by the Trump Administration today, any Medicare- or Medicaid-participating hospital would be barred from providing gender-affirming care to *any child*, even if the care is not paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.
