My plans may in fact involve painting my ceiling, but close enough.
Got my tickets for New Years Eve. It’s going to be a fun night!

Honestly? Living in Alabama.

When you live between Selma and Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, it is fairly impossible to fall into the "this is the worst it has ever been and it can't get better" pit.

It was way worse for people here, in living memory, and they didn't shrug & give up. So I can't either.
What gave you courage in 2025?

Watching this back almost makes me emotional. People are good. People care about their neighbors. People also care about people they’ll never meet. Here’s how $5 donations added up to $3M in proof of that this year, week after week.

Listing is still up, so YES we're still shipping these ornaments commemorating the legacy of the US Penny

For your tree
or your wall
or just a neat little keepsake!
Folks have been asking about the Classic version of this ornament

of which I forgot to post pictures

because my brain is merely sad electric squigglemeat

Our 'Classic' style ornament is made of clean wood and tied with a red ribbon for a classic look that never clashes with your tree decor.

12YO girl signed up to do “stand up comedy” at the talent show. 13YO boy decided to heckle her. Teacher started to tell the boy to leave her alone, but the 12YO comedian said “no, no, let him go, this is the closest he’s ever going to get to having a conversation with a girl.”
What's an insult you'll never forget?

Bay Area people, I have a tradition with a couple friends: every year we try out the winner of the "Mole to Die For" contest. This year's winner was Cocina Mamá Cholita on Mission and 30th. I promise you if you eat these enchiladas, you will feel deeply content with the world for a few hours.

Sometimes people are like "I can't figure out why this rando blocked me?" and let me just tell you, from my experience, sometimes someone is searching keywords for people whose opinions they don't like and they block everyone who RTed a shitty post from three months ago.

I’ve been going super hard on a variant of her hot chocolate focaccia. I use a dry mix designed for babka mixed with instant pudding powder (to keep it non dairy), simple syrup in the stretch and folds for moistness, and pearl sugar on top. It’s amazing. Photo is from my first attempt (pre-sugar).

Someone remake “It’s a Wonderful Life” but Mr. Potter believes that hoarding is morally required so he can devote resources to delivering a far future with trillions of humans while George Bailey is like, “Gosh Darnit! What if taking care of people today is what takes care of people in the future?!”

Please SHARE! Writers! We want to apologize that we are still processing the recent short story submissions. Uncanny Magazine was hit with a massive volume of submissions due to AI subs. We hope to get through the pile over the next two weeks. Thank you for your patience.

For day job I've always had two editing modes.

1. Let me fix a few awkward phrasings or correct a factual error here or there but mostly leave it alone.

2. I got halfway through this and it's such a hot mess it's easier to throw out and start fresh.

Guess which one I suspect AI would be.
I'd argue an AI first draft is *worse* than a blank page.
It's starting with something barfed by the machine, so it will influence you, perhaps in ways you'll never even sense, but it will be there.

When you start with an actual blank page, the mess is still *you*.
