Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years and involves immigrants acquiring a green card, extensive interviews, background checks, classes and a citizenship test. The naturalization ceremony is the final step to the process, where the oath of allegiance and a citizenship certificate are granted. Immigrants approved to be naturalized went to Faneuil Hall Thursday - known as the country's cradle of liberty - for that long-awaited moment to pledge allegiance to the United States. But instead, as they lined up, some were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that they couldn't proceed due to their countries of origin.

Landlords admitting on tape that they had no legal grounds to block a Black restaurateur’s lease, but doing it anyway after the CID intervened. And a twelve-member CID board, every single member white, acting as gatekeepers over who gets liquor licenses and who gets “turned in to Regulated Industries,” the city agency that polices alcohol permits.” If Lee’s claims are proven, this is what a modern conspiracy to permeate segregation throughout a community looks like. Not burning crosses. Not explicit laws. But contracts weaponized as cudgels, liquor licenses held hostage, and music turned into evidence of who deserves to belong. Welcome to what can only be described as a new form of Jim Crow in Kansas City.

Dear Commissioner Morath, As the authors of Senate Bill 12, which took effect on September Ist, we write regarding concerns with the implementation of certain provisions of the bill. The focus of Senate Bill 12 is protecting and strengthening parental rights across their child's educational experience. As you and your team are aware, the Legislature included protections for a parent's right to consent to any medical, psychiatric and psychological treatment of their child. This included obtaining parental consent to provide healthcare services, medication, or conduct a medical procedure. Many concerned parents, educators and administrators alike have reached out to our offices regarding the implementation of this specific provision, with questions about what is and is not required and/or allowed under the new law. The most concerning reports are that some school districts are taking an "all or nothing" approach parents must consent to all healthcare and mental health services and treatment or none. While we understand and appreciate the fact that school districts are being careful to faithfully implement the provisions of the bill, we are equally concerned that some school districts seem to be reluctant to provide even the most basic first aid to their students. Importantly, it is our hope and expectation that, in an effort to comply with the provisions of the bill, school districts would also use simple common sense. Specifically, we are concerned of some reports that indicate school districts are withholding band-aids and ice packs for students with minor scratches and scrapes. Clearly, there is a distinct difference from providing a student with an ice pack, as opposed to other injuries that would necessitate medical attention, including the dispensing of medication that should require consent on file before providing it to a child. We understand that the Texas Board of Nursing has also received questions on these provisions of Senate Bill 12. We have also receiv…
