There was no "get a smartphone or you'll be left behind" marketing, because smartphones are actually useful.

If your invention is good, you don't have to use that kind of pressure to market it.
It's like all of these hucksters and charlatans aren't actually technologists.

You don't have to threaten people to adopt a technology. If you do, it's worthless. You don't have to say "OH NO. YOU'LL BE LEFT BEHIND!"

It's all a con. People looking to make a ton of money and get out fast.

I’ve been asking people “is the water here safe to drink” when I travel my whole life. Only here in NZ have people been SUPER INDIGNANT at the question.

Y’all are fools to think that having a poorly regulated agricultural industry can coexist with drinkable water.

I appreciate this graphic issued by the NZ Central Sikh Association in response to the Destiny racists for its inspiring message of anti-discrimination, mutual aid and unity across ethnic & faith communities, and also its subtle reminder that Sikhs are known badasses so why would you fuck with them.

A non-existent paper attributed to ‪Ben Williamson‬ has already been cited 42 times.

It's like Scholarly Communication has been injected with misinformation bombs. Events are totally out of control. No one has a handle on its extent. And, there's no plan to stop it.

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Every day a fresh new reminder that the New Zealand justice system and its very well paid judges do not give one single shit about the victims of sexual offenders.
name suppression granted on fair-trial grounds, but the fair-trial grounds only exist because the accused's lawyer asked that there be multiple trials. Which seems very... tactical.

In some places in NZ we have these concrete separators colloquially called “tim tams”, after the biscuit/cookie!

Spoiler alert: crappy drivers complain about them and damage their cars on them 🙄

Change my mind: "Prior good character" should *increase* the sentence in cases like this
He didn’t hand himself in ffs and it was was 10 years of offending. “While he (McSkimming) expressed remorse, the report writer said he centred the impact on himself and those close to him, and did not express contrition regarding the level of harm caused to the children in images” #nzpol

once again i find myself disgusted by how prominent white men are treated by the NZ justice system.

it's a fucking outrage!

It seems pretty clear this was an antisemitic attack on evidence so far, & looks like Aus is going to increase gun controls & support jewish communities - the right things to do

NZ politicians & agitators trying to claim that leftwing NZ MPs are somehow to blame is fucking foul & should be punished

Min of Health has decided not to continue with the FluTracking survey each week from next year.

What a ridiculous decision. The cost savings must be minimal

What are our taxes actually used for if not things like public health?

At least... 💀
Commercial farmers in this country are the NRA of New Zealand.
If 40 people a year were dying from say rancid steak n cheese pies, there would be a national outcry (justifiably), but because it's 'a mystery' in our waterways from the untouchable agriculture sector - meh it's fine.

What a shit country.

This is gonna be the meth-house testing racket all over again
Me so old, I remember sitting in Nandor Tanczos' Parliamentary office discussing the saliva tests available at the time and their false positive rates. From memory, a shittonne of these saliva tests were made by a fundamentalist Corporate Christian backing.

I’d thought we may be able to sunset the RSS feeds on the NZ Legislation website, and replace with an API. Nope! There was a lot we learned from current users, but most compelling for me personally was the value ascribed to anonymous notifications to changes in the law.

One big effect of AI hype and promotion of unreliable chatbots is that a significant amount of additional friction and labour is being injected into our knowledge-making and -maintaining systems. At a time when these systems are already contracting and being starved by growing austerity.

I remain adamant that rare wine fraud is the most pro-social, most economically productive, most just, and most hilarious crime that exists. The prison sentence for anyone convicted of it should be two weeks in a resort and extra training to help them do it better.
