I was a theater kid & loved Tom Stoppard since my teens (thanks to the film Brazil & the play Rosen.& Guilder. Are Dead).
As a lighting designer I got to cocreate absurdly elaborate visuals but nothing *remotely* like this, which illuminates the transcendence of theatre & its utterly ephemeral nature
Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

What a beautiful man! I grew up on his games, & only had access to Mousetrap at my grandparents, about 90 minutes away, which probably made my heart grow fonder of it.

This obit is delightful, & without paywall

A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?

Excellent news! This astonishing breakthrough will prevent countless deaths & cases of extreme suffering from this awful disease that is spreading due to the climate catastrophe
Brazil approves the first vaccine against dengue. The disease killed 6000 Brazilians in 2024.

This is a really remarkable achievement. I got dengue in 2015, and even with the mild case I had, it was a really miserable experience.

I think Americans are realizing that democracy is a participation sport, and the the government is ours if we want it to be. I feel like we got complacent and hoped some other third party would do the work for us. Seems like we have to learn that lesson every generation.

The Trump admin is planning to say that being from Cuba (or any other travel ban country) is a "significant negative factor" that could lead to a denial of any of several discretionary immigration benefits (like green cards).

Seriously; national origin discrimination as official government policy.

One thing I keep screaming from the rooftops: "The border" and "Immigration" ARE SEPARATE ISSUES. You can be (and most Americans are!) pro-immigration but also desirous of a well-regulated border. We want our immigration process to be welcoming, generous, and orderly.
Some Dems and pundits overread the significance of Trump's win. They looked at dissatisfaction with the border and discerned a seismic cultural reaction to immigration levels inside the country. The former was real. The latter is a mirage.
