That paper pointed out many flood events we identified seem to be driven by heavy rain compounded by high tide that limits drainage. That is a dynamic playing out in Miami that will only worsen with sea-level rise. Alex Hall also wrote on our paper at the time: www.miamiherald.com/news/local/e...
In Miami, tweets about flooded streets come before the actual floods, a new study found

One of the terrible things about the culture wars is how the older generation is harming the prospects of the younger. The recent Brexit poll, showing how so many Brexit voters have died, underlined this for me.
Thanks to @johnholbein1.bsky.social I learned about this paper on rent control in Berlin.

Because I was marking, I immediately downloaded the replication materials.

Um, ok...

This paper forthcoming at the JOP provides evidence that rent control in Germany actually made tenants MASSIVELY *less* NIMBY.

This result was in the opposite direction of the authors' pre-registered expectations.

And the effect sizes are, truly, massive.

I'm super skeptical of the result/magnitude here:

• gradual change doesn't match traffic responses, which were sharp
• confidence intervals are tiny (PM has high variance!)
• This is not a standard DiD
• Cook et al. use synthetic control + more monitors and find no change

I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.
