this is in line with my belief that absolute numbers don't really matter all that much, the ratio between numbers is far more important
This is a crucial point. In the UK, the political debate about “how much should the minimum wage be” has become completely separated from “how many homes are we building”, “what are we doing in tax credits” - in that respect it is like immigration, where we just yell about numbers, uselessly.
In 2013 my monthly take home was about £1000, my rent £200, and I remember turning 25 so well because I could afford to go out without stress and have friends thanks to working tax credits. The vibes, for lots of people, have entirely disappeared.

To give the ONS some credit, part of the reason they suck at this is because the British state has decided it's not its job to monitor who leaves the country, for some reason

I attended a debate club once as a teenager and lost. it ranks as one of my proudest achievements
of all the dumb shit that sucks these days, the dumbest and pettiest shit that sucks is the way people fetishize debate. i would like to revert to the old roughly agreed-upon cultural understanding that debate club is for boring friendless nerds
