My humanities dept was relevant. Majors were up. Courses were 100% enrolled. Revenue positive, GE serving, etc etc. We were still eliminated.

The problem is ideological administrative destruction. Couldn’t write a report, a self study, or a spreadsheet against that.
'For humanities departments to continue to matter, they must challenge the modern world rather than accommodate it. Indeed, the most useful lesson the humanities have to offer today is a profoundly countercultural one: Difficulty is good, an end in its own right.' 2/2

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

He's also responsible for raising all the money that paid for bringing Hollingsworth v. Perry & even more importantly Bostic v. Schaefer, which created the circuit split that forced SCOTUS to take on Obergefell v. Hodges. The role he played in American marriage equality cannot be overstated.
The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

I also feel like his body of work really disproves the persistent claim that joyful, hopeful, funny, romantic or lighthearted stories are inherently intellectually lesser and can't be Real Art
Taking a break from the sickening tragedy to focus on the beauty for a moment. Rob Reiner achieved something so rare and coveted that artists and entertainers dream of and rarely achieve: cultural permanence. How many times have you made a reference to something going to 11? Shouted "Inconceivable"?

Rob Reiner gave us a lingua franca that connected us to fellow travelers for DECADES.

He made American culture classic, memorable, accessible, poignant and unpretentious in a way few have. Devastating.

I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury

There is possibly no clearer evidence of how American society has been bent to conservatives' whims than regarding gun violence. Our country's gun laws are flatly insane, and there has been no meaningful momentum for serious reform in years.
Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

Two victims of previous school shootings — Mia Tretta, who was shot in the stomach in 2019 at Saugus High School, and Zoe Weissman, who survived the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — are now at Brown. Gun violence is out of control in this country.

A reminder that most Americans who are life-long citizens have nothing OTHER than a Real ID to prove their citizenship. This is CBP’s chief enforcer saying that ID doesn’t count.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

It's clear from the article that ICE is *miserable* here. They're freezing their asses off and being harassed everywhere they go. Property managers aren't allowing them access to rental properties and people know their rights and aren't letting them in.

KEEP IT UP.

I am deadly serious when I say that any liberal Project 2028 people should be taking names of the civil servants who go way past their authority to do stuff like this.

That is very much not me saying that normal employees following bad orders should be fired. But there’s a line. This crosses it.
That should be a career ending act of corruption

Gabe understands this stuff very well.
But more generally, politics is ALL ABOUT pushing people into uncomfortable situations and making them face consequences. Of course they want to keep fucking around in the shadows. It’s our job to put the spotlight on them so we know which ones to get rid of.
The GOP has lost control of the chamber, I am extremely skeptical they have the votes to stop impeachment votes all together.

That means there is a void. It should be filled with calls to throw Trump out of office and into prison.

"Male socialization" is kind of meaningless, then, insofar as we *all* are taught that Boys Are Better Than Girls.

It *does* affect the respective behavior of boys and girls, who learn exactly what they're allowed to get away with, and how much, but people forgot how this affects queer kids.

A bigot may remain a bigot in his heart, but it’s still very much a strategic win if he becomes too intimidated to be horrible to others in public. When bigots are afraid, it becomes a lot *harder* for them to recruit others and to brutalize innocent people.

Under the Trump admin’s new policy, dependent children of visa applicants are not allowed to have their social media set to private during the entire visa process. They MUST make their social media public.

Impeachment is a tool for political accountability, not a “sacred” constitutional ritual. If it were truly about evidence, the Senate would’ve convicted Trump unanimously after his coup attempt—the same way every jury has unanimously found him liable or guilty when the facts actually matter.
