We definitely have to have an advisory because everybody's feelings are in a horrible place. Don't take it out on users online by being nasty. That's not who you're mad at.

Before Dems send out their next round of fundraising requests, I want to be sure that we're clear on what it's going to take to get my donations.

I'm not giving any money to any politician who isn't out in the streets facing off with ICE. It is the bare fucking minimum.

It’s real that struggling businesses are taking the hit today for expressing solidarity with the victims of ICE slavecatchers. So for those with means, I declare the weekend Spent That Shit Saturday and Sunday at their shops and eateries to provide them some instant payback. #spendthatshit

Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act in 1947 (over Truman's veto) to make general strikes so incredibly difficult to organize that there hasn't been one since.

That there is a general strike happening in a major US city on such short notice is nothing short of a miracle.
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

Seriously, @people.com has been meeting the moment better than 90% of publications with direct reporting and crystal clear headlines.

This is a good way for the low-information voters who are usually detached from the news cycle to get turned around.
What America will read this weekend while in line at the grocery checkout:

People are kidnapping preschoolers and macing fully restrained protesters because they like the power to make others suffer, and I need us all to burn into our memories what they’re doing now because they’re definitely going to be asking for grace and forgiveness in the not too distant future.

'Why aren't they in the streets' is answered almost every day in my small town by people in the streets! Rather than asking 'why aren't they in the streets' it's worth asking 'why isn't your media showing them in the streets' and 'who is served by downplaying resistane in its myriad forms.'
The idea that there are no protests in the US and no one is standing up to Trump is proving incredibly hard to kill over here in Germany. It’s become dogma, utterly detached from empirical reality.

I wonder if the people who keep talking like that understand they’re perpetuating regime propaganda.

Question for the historians and anthropologists - in addition to the horrific rise of fascist violence, was the end of the Weimar Republic also this deeply absurd and embarrassing? Asking for a country.

You cannot overstate how startling it is to see a politician just say the thing with clarity and poise. No fearful hemming. No overwrought qualifying down til it’s meaningless. No lingering sense that there is a loyalty to a donor class or an ideology of stasis that they’d never admit to.
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

It's not the worst "Marry/Fuck/Kill" in history, but it's pretty bad.
I am currently standing five feet from Tim Tebow, who is chatting with Marco Rubio, and to my other side it’s Michael Irvin chatting with Stephen A. Smith.

A lot going on at the moment on the Miami sideline.

The "don't punish us, we didn't vote for him" American liberals are the same ones who gloat and talk about "deserving it" when anything bad to red states.

We are not a serious people.
Even so-called liberals, who are supposed to know about things like systems thinking, deep down are entirely committed to individualism. They're shocked that other countries have to treat the US as a monolithic entity because on the world stage, WE ARE.
and yes, if you are an American who claims to be anti-Trump and pro-international solidarity, but whine about the prospect of being mildly inconvenienced: you're a child. grow up.

The Response of Europe and Canada really shows just how deep the alliance and friendship goes. Any other country would have roving bands of angry youth smashing every McDonalds sign they see. They are being incredibly restrained on both governmentally but also socially.
To those who are claiming that it'd be too cruel and extreme for the EU to cut off American tourist visas now (or to otherwise sanction or inconvenience us Americans in any way)....

You're REALLY not gonna like what happens if the madman Trump is permitted to set off a hot war with Europe.

The goal here is to do whatever it takes to force the MAGAs to back down before we get to a point of "the USA launches an imperialist war against the European Union."

Achieving this may require temporarily inconveniencing us Americans.

Nuanced take: I think it's really important to give *normal citizens* who supported Trump and off-ramp and *professional writers, pundits and politicians* who supported Trump should have to wear it like a scarlet letter for the rest of their lives
This is aggravating, because on the one hand I think it's really important to give fascists an off-ramp and positive reinforcement when they use it...

...on the other hand, FUCK that guy, in particular.

there's literally tons of scholarship on how platforming people like Shapiro for debate legitamises them.

even if there wasn't, that's not what Newsom is doing here - he's horrible at actually countering his guests' points & is failing to even muster any kind of resistance to them.

"The people I agree with and the people I disagree with both think you're an asshole - you must be doing something right" is a hell of a conclusion to draw.
NEW: This week, Daily Show host Jon Stewart introduced his audience to Jenin Younes, describing her as a courageous civil rights attorney who had been canceled by both the right and left and therefore “must be doing something right.”

Really, she spent years undermining public health—and Democrats.
