anytime an alex garland-associated movie is in theaters is a good time to remember he's thanked extremely vocal transphobes in the "special thanks" section of almost every movie he's directed

i don't really give a shit if consultants think being anti-ICE is "good messaging" or whatever when people are actively being shot, beat, gassed and jailed.

Not a good look out of the gate for our guy in W11.
Mayor Frey's veto of the humane encampment ordinance (from last year) has been sustained. Council members voting to sustain the veto were Warren, Shaffer, Whiting, Rainville, Vetaw, Palmisano

- Use routine powers (construction, traffic calming) that are neutral but would reclaim public space for resident use/safety -- esp around children/essential services
- Require warrants for every interaction that req's city involvement
- Inspect hotels for fire code violations caused by firearms

the question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. how does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms? how does he get the georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince republican house members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?
Trump says a lot of deranged shit, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms.

Minneapolis is headed towards something resembling a general strike, if you were wondering how the campaign to cow working people into quiescence is going
Last night, The Minneapolis Federation of Educators Local 59 signed on to the call for a Jan 23 shutdown. That brings total labor support to: the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1005, SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, CWA Local 7250, St. Paul Federation of Educators Local 28, and the MFE 59
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

we talked to a bunch of people who were at the bar and drinking at 10am about their fear of a city 2.5 hours away that they likely visit less than once a year.
NYTimes has truly outdone itself with this latest in its "ask white guys in diner" genre. Thank goodness we get a perspective on what's happening in Minneapolis from people in **Nisswa** who probably mean Brainerd when they say they "prefer not to go the city anymore" www.nytimes.com/2026/01/15/u...

So, among the the things I got to help with in law school at UMN was putting together questions for a Minneapolis Mayoral Candidate forum in 2017. We made sure to have a question about sanctuary cities, and guess what Jacob Frey said?

Not that it's at all surprising, but for those of you outside of Minnesota here's a quick sequence of events:

1) Governor Walz tells us that we must not fight anywhere but the courts.

2) ICE shoots someone else.

3) Frey tells us to eat shit and go home.

Right now the strategy of the Governor, Mayor, and really the DFL writ large is to AVOID the conflict, and avoid escalation. But that misreads the attention economy, as Democrats always due.

They need to MAKE A SCENE AND MAKE A TV SHOW. Make them arrest priests, rabbis and the mayor.

I hate to say this, but someone of higher profile is going to need to end up in custody trying to stop this. MPD needs to pull over ICE vehicles with flipped plates; O'Hara may end up at Whipple, but that advances the cause. Make them arrest the Governor or Mayor.
