I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Book 1 was excellent and looking forward to Book 2! There's also a fair amount of city planning related bits in the story! 🏙️
If you’re looking for books to read over the holidays, or anytime, now’s a good time to get into my queer Portland magical girl novels!

I’m building a whole new original magical girl series here, centered on a trans protagonist. A lot of folks enjoy it, and you might, too!

So AI lovers are getting their…

*just desserts*

It’s ok I’ll ban myself.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

So we're slightly late to the party given that the big news dropped a month ago, but here's a full hour of the #TerribleLizards #Podcast where @iszi.com and I talk about #Nanotyrannus and what it all means for T. rex and tyrannosaur research going forwards. terriblelizards.libsyn.com/nanotyrannus
Terrible Lizards: Nanotyrannus or not?
The biggest news in palaeontology this year dropped just in time for us to miss it with last month’s episode but we’re giving it the full hour this time. The idea that there’s a miniature tyrannosaur ...

Steel thyself, child, and focus on the pins. Just as in life, you may only take one step at a time. But take care; every step removes yet another pin from the triangle of fate.

Leave but one, you're genius. Leave two, you're purdy smart. Leave three and you're just plain dumb. Leave four or more...

Working on invertebrate #paleoart at the moment, knowing I'm probably making mistakes despite best efforts, consulting primary literature etc. Inverts are much like fossil plants: there are few accessible resources on their appearance so we must wing it, or go down deep rabbit holes to restore them.

hey don't be so hard on yourselves; it delivered oceans of sensitive government and citizen data to billionaires

I have this idea for a bookstore selling only carefully curated self-published books.

The ads would say “We don’t have that” over & over as customers ask for Maas, King, Yarros, Sanderson, etc.

“Well what do you have?”

“The most incredible books you’ve never heard of.”

If only someone had warned everyone that they were fascists seeking to control everyone. Oh well, it's better that we sent the cops in to brutalize people calling for peace, and fear-mongered about queers and Black folks and immigrants and women begging for respect.
The party that promised "free speech on campus" has made sure there can be no free speech on campuses.
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

Wildcat internment camps where virtually all detainees are illegally arrested by any measure of our legal system prior to ‘25 and where half do not have a single mark on their records.
NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.

I have major concerns about our trend of commercial upzoning. Densification can hurt local business if not done right and living by local biz makes car free living possible. My thoughts on how Berkeley should approach this.
