LotR is certainly crisper on HBO, but I think it does lose a little something in hi def. In many ways it's a culmination of the grand fantasy tradition of Camelot, Excalibur, Conan, returning with fanfare after a slump in the 90s. It cries out to be viewed in the magic bloomy haze of 480p.
Heartbreaking news today, as my family has just discovered that our Fellowship of the Ring extended edition DVD has a scratch and breaks the entire playback as soon as Saruman shows up for the first time. Gandalf is sad about it too. Please be respectful of my mourning process.
