As we start the new semester, I thought I’d share what I’m doing in response to Chat GPT. While I have a no AI clause, policing it is not productive most of the time.

Instead, I’ve included this automatic 0’s clause in my syllabus that has worked very, very well, feel free to use/modify!

Automatic 0’s: Should your paper have any of the following, you will receive an automatic 0 and possibly subject to disciplinary action for plagiarism: (1) you did not include your write-ups or rough draft; (2) paper does not match with handwritten research; (3) paper has no citations; (4) paper has false quotations that do not appear in sources/are made up; (5) paper references sources that do not exist; (6) student cannot answer questions about specific parts of paper when asked during final exam

The video also allegedly shows the CBP agent saying “Do something, bitch” before shots were fired. In private Signal chats, the CBP agent boasted to other officers: “I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys.” If he felt comfortable enough communicating that to fellow employees, it speaks to an irredeemable organizational culture.

I am reminded that every time someone recommended I use Transkribus to train a model to read the handwritten manuscript novels I was working on, I had to explain that the process required first that I hand-transcribe perfectly clean sample of the hand that was generally 75-100% of the document.

This is simply not technically possible. You cannot generate enough writing in-house to train an LLM. You cannot generate enough art in-house to train a GAN. People who think they have a model "trained on our own material" are using a base model of mass-scraped data, unknowingly or disingenuously.

I'm seeing conflicting reporting on the role of the US oil industry. There's this, but then there's reporting that US oil companies don't like the quality of V oil, don't want more oil in a market w/low prices already, are hesitant about spending all the infrastructure $$$ required

I have never had a student contact me to request an accommodation, nor have I ever read a commonplace book and thought I needed to tell them if they wanted it they could have it so I can't really say how well this works
