"Vanderbilt is failing in its moral responsibility to push back against rising authoritarianism and political coercion."

My effort to convince Vanderbilt (and all universities) to take a stand for the rule of law, the Constitution, and our democracy.

Does blinding--i.e., concealing applicants' identities--reduce gender gaps in academic conference paper acceptances?

Nope!

Does blinding do anything?

It does! Blinding reduces gaps in acceptances by institution rank.

Oh nice, you've just managed to justify my whimsical impulse purchase! It is easier to subtly check the time on the ring than a typical watch

I know, they really seem like a crazy april fools prank! But it's real and has watch, calendar and stopwatch functions and a backlight. So pleasantly ridiculous.

Right! The buttons might be too small to ever press, but how cool would it be!

Managed to snag one of the new Casio ring watches and it's making me very happy. It's just so absolutely ridiculous!

Look babes, I know there's not been a lot to look forward to lately, but we gotta keep our spirits up. It's an imperative. And I know one small thing I can do to help

So just to let you know we are about to be so back

Some may take comfort in Trump not being able (yet) to jail his enemies, but these attacks are costly and deter people from opposing him. In that way, they tilt the playing field even when the efforts at retribution are not fully successful. Precisely what competitive authoritarian regimes look like
NYT: “.. Trump is facing obstacles as he tries to use the Justice Department to investigate, prosecute and jail those he targets.”

But his appointees “are harnessing a range of departments .. and rarely used powers outside the Justice Department to inflict pain.”

Agreed, I'd put it in the results but clearly labeled (almost every paper I publish has a mix of preregistered and posthoc analyses). Sometimes the data points you to new interesting ideas and sometimes you just didn't think of something ahead of time.

For a yr, I've been working on a series for The New Atlantis about the vast systems that underlie our lives. Our ancestors built them up over decades to fend off hunger, thirst, darkness and disease. But too few of us know about them—and they're all at risk. The conclusion is now available online:
Why We Are Better Off Than a Century Ago
Our ancestors built grand public systems to conquer hunger, thirst, darkness, and squalor. That progress can be lost if we forget it.

I want to talk about why journalism is important. It's an evergreen topic, but seems particularly important right now.

So, buckle up. This thread won't be short, but it will be (I think) good.
