After two wonderful years coordinating the Queer Politics Webinar, @haasvioleta.bsky.social and @bertous.bsky.social are saying goodbye. It’s been a truly spectacular experience, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything we’ve learned along the way. 💜

Very happy to see this out in CPS! We study class identities and their social and political relevance over several decades in Britain, Denmark, Norway, and the US. A small thread:

📈 Our key finding: the rural–urban divide didn’t grow gradually. It *jumped* in 2016. Support for Republicans became much more strongly associated with living in rural areas in 2016—and this pattern then remained stable in 2020.
Register to our upcoming seminar series, where speakers will explore the causes and consequences of the changing debate on immigration across Europe.

Brigitte Bardot has been fined for racism multiple times, she called muslim immigrants "filthy", she openly supported the far right like few other celebrities in Europe. She was not "controversial," she was a hateful homophobe, racist and bigot.
Every election these days seems to be between an authoritarian, corrupt, and terrible person, who runs on security issues and anti-immigration, versus a seemingly nice, but somewhat boring person lacking visions. And then it is 50:50 who wins.
DOGE was A LOT less likely to cancel contracts from companies that donated money to Republicans than companies that donated to Democrats.

It’s almost as if perceptions of Santa’s politics reflect voters’ own politics 😱

🤷Does tribal thinking toward ethnic out-groups shape policy support?

➡️Using visual conjoints in Germany and the Netherlands, @bertous.bsky.social & @turnbulldugarte.com show that nativists support policies selectively based on group cues www.cambridge.org/core/journal... #FirstView
I’ve found that many academics confuse their idiosyncratic tastes about how academic work should be done with laws that everyone else must follow.

This tendency shows up again and again in their feedback and advice.

More details in @bertous.bsky.social’s thread.

Notes on process: this piece was desk rejected once and accepted after one round of revisions at PSRM.

In a pre-reg visual conjoint set-up based on a fictitious public consultation, *both* nativists and nativists reject policy recommendations from muslim associations.

@simonhix.bsky.social shared some feedback from his students on our apsr piece explaining that - if our theory holds - we would expect to see respondents move away from those exposed to the Muslim out-group regardless of whether they are opponents *or* proponents of a policy.

In this paper we ask: does the theory hold regardless of the policy type (femonationalism, homonationalism, econationalism) *and* the direction of the policy

In our first paper on instrumental inclusion we showed that people update their views on LGBTQ+ rights in response to out-group threat.

Here we extend the theory to test diverse cases of selective inclusion

New publication with @turnbulldugarte.com in @psrm.bsky.social! 🧵

We study whether citizens’ liberal values are selective: do people support policies based on who promotes them?

Short answer: Yes, and it's driven by ethnic out-group disidentification. (1/11) 👇
