The great mid-20th century fantasy trilogy is Gormenghast, not LOTR.

We should bring back pocket paperbacks. Pocket-sized is the correct size for a paperback.

thinking about the liberal politicians willing to try to compromise with fascists by abandoning minority groups they don't really like - i wish they understood that fascists will come for everyone eventually. even themselves. fascism unopposed is a ruined state with everyone dead

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

People will scoff at virtue signaling and then wonder why today’s billionaires don’t build museums, libraries, hospitals, and universities like Gilded Age ones did.

If you titled those videos something like "Hitler Youth member REACTS to Creedence Clearwater Revival" the thumbnail would fit the conventions of YouTube just as well.

English teacher here. My job is to teach critical thinking, clear expression, and the ability to appraise a text for meaning, subtext, bias and agenda. These things are actively damaging to the far right because it makes it harder for them to persuade people to vote against their own interests.

Given he'd try to implement the economic policies of Truss and Milei, it's safe to say that the education sector will be the least of his problems.

Teachers will strike alright...because our pension funds will collapse.

I've said before that the ideal level of fame is to be Gene Hackman's character in THE CONVERSATION - anonymous nobody on the street but treated with awed reverence at your industry's trade show bsky.app/profile/shai...

Science fiction author John Scalzi talks about the happy medium of fame for him, where people that are really into your work recognize you, and it’s rare enough that it’s generally an enjoyable experience, but you’re completely anonymous otherwise.

This is what put me off Mandy, an otherwise clever and well made film that should have regarded that kind of plot device as beneath it.

I am an authority on Classic Doctor Who, to the extent of being able to recite every episode broadcast between 1963 and 1989 in order from memory, and yet I have never seen a single episode of Blake's Seven.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

I tried to think of something that would encapsulate the whole of Led Zeppelin in a single line and all I could think of was "squeeze my hobbit"

Don’t know who originally coined the observation that all Led Zep songs are about shagging or goblins, or both. This felt like a wise nod to that.

I particularly enjoyed the line about how Plant wrote on Led Zeppelin II "about his wife, about his conflicted feelings for his sister-in-law, and about hobbits, sometimes all in the same song."

The new episode of A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs is now up! This one looks at the formation of Led Zeppelin, and looks in detail at the inspirations behind the songs on their first album.

well, there's that one song about how visiting Iceland makes you feel like a Viking, but generally feels spot on

Every working, professional poet in the world today would give their right arm for one of their poems to have had the exposure and impact that this six year-old's has had over the years.

We're getting a wave of articles that are like, "gee willikers it sure seems like the people who complained about 'cancel culture' for years really like canceling people."

Yes! This was extremely obvious at the time and a lot of us pointed it out!
washingtonpost.com
Some say canceling is an act of redress. Others blame it on a mob.

“People have used the word ‘cancel’ so loosely,” Ernest Owens author of “The Case for Cancel Culture,” said, “that everyone’s calling everything a cancellation.”
How cancel culture came for everyone
Few issues in recent years have united the American right as much as their professed hatred of cancel culture. That’s changing.
