Baha and Samaa have worked hard to make their tent into a nice home for their girls, but it provides neither shade nor insulation, it's infested with insects, and they're all suffering from the effects of malnutrition. Please help. gofund.me/db56c7ce3 @mommunism.bsky.social @lexialex.bsky.social 🍉

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Rania. Rania’s husband who was a university professor of commercial law recently broke his leg when trying to get aid and now Rania is trying to take care of her children Aya, 18, Jana, 16, Oday, 11 and Kinda, 6.

Why no English speaking outlets covering such an egregious case of abuse by a high profile scientist?

Thomas Crowther dismissed from ETH after multiple cases brought against him over multiple years.

As we say: ⭐ #optimism
“..people get so disheartened after all of these international climate agreements because they don’t see instantaneous improvement. But it speaks to how this pressure [by conservationists and the public] is still really important.”

rachgarr.bsky.social
🧭 The bottom line? Conservation trends come and go, but lasting change depends on sustained public, civic, and international pressure over the long term. This is especially important for protecting forests when political will wanes, as in the Brazilian Amazon in the late 2010s.

rachgarr.bsky.social
Our approach spotlighted less tangible drivers of forest protection that are vital for generating political will but often more difficult to evaluate than discrete policy interventions:
🗣️ Civil society advocacy
🌍 International diplomacy
📢 Public awareness

rachgarr.bsky.social
‼️ We find political will and law enforcement were by far the most critical factors in both regions.

But how does political will emerge?

rachgarr.bsky.social
Our new study, led by Joss Lyons-White, @spencerthink.bsky.social, & myself in Conservation Letters, asked 36 experts in forest conservation across the Brazilian Amazon & Indonesia what factors have mattered most for protecting forests in these countries

🖤 If you don't know where to start on the world's conservation problems, advocacy is a key way to do that.

✨ As our research shows, these efforts can help build political will & the associated policies needed for change.

I have to wonder how many of the men at her Penn post just resented her bc of her deep values, her commitment to stick by them, and her clear success.

…happy to recruit but loathe to retain if you have a spine.

Can someone please invent an American to British translation device? Basically take whatever an American would say directly and then fluff it up in indirect and passive language. Make sure it throws in an “I’m afraid” at the beginning of every sentence for Oxbridgey types. Thanks!

Though tbh when men yell at me now I do tell them to calm down knowing just how infuriating that will be!

Because the world needs some angry people to push back on everyone else’s bull**** so that others in the future don’t have to deal with it.

So yes - I pledge allegiance to angry women. 🫡

rachgarr.bsky.social
But you know what. Younger students - women, men, people from less privileged backgrounds all keep coming to me for support and we have established a place where they can flourish.

rachgarr.bsky.social
This is exactly the tightrope that women face - tone policing by men who get away with whatever tone they want. And this is so much worse in the UK academy where people dress up their insults in fancy language.

rachgarr.bsky.social
But you know what - when peers that are threatened by my success complain about my tone being aggressive and unprofessional it makes me even angrier.
