We made history together! Because of supporters from across the state, my campaign secured enough nomination signatures to qualify in less than 24 hours. (1/3🧵)

Despite broad political support, one third of the nation's Climate Adaptation Science Centers will wind down in coming days due to lack of funds.

The Northeast, South Central, and Pacific Islands will be left without actionable science on drought, floods, wildfire, sea level rise and other hazards.
Trump officials shut off funding for climate adaptation centers
A third of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Climate Adaptation Science Centers are expected to drastically wind down and possibly close after Sept. 30.

It’s happening. The takedown of Jimmy Kimmel is likely the start of a campaign to use the murder of Charlie Kirk as a pretext to use the power of the White House to wipe out Trump’s critics and his political opponents.

But we aren’t powerless. We can mobilize and organize. Now.

✅ We have a new study out this week, which projects changes in cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning days across the Western United States, along with the associated risk of lightning-ignited wildfires (LIW).

+ #OpenAccess Paper (@agu.org): doi.org/10.1029/2025...
+ Summary: news.wsu.edu/press-releas...
Screenshot of Figure 2c in Kalashnikov et al. (2025, Earth's Future), which shows CESM2 ensemble distribution of projected changes in CG lightning and LIW-risk days averaged across ecoprovinces. Horizontal lines within boxplots indicate medians and whiskers represent spread of the 50 ensemble members. Text along the bottom shows ensemble-mean changes, with * indicating that a majority of grid cells have >75% ensemble agreement on the sign of change in that ecoprovince.

“This is just another way to stop science,” said Bethany Bradley, the center’s co-director. The Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center is 1 of 9 regional hubs across the country that helps state and local partners develop plans to adapt wildlife, water and land to the effects of climate change.

Today we were denied entry to an ICE facility in Baltimore where were exercising our oversight role as Members of Congress. The law is clear: ICE is REQUIRED to let us into these facilities.

They just don't want the American people to see what's happening behind closed doors.

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?"

Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

USFS is converting timber sales to 'digital tree marking', which means loggers, not trained federal foresters, get to choose which trees to take. All in the name of increasing timber outputs, w/no understanding or regard for ecological concerns. What could go wrong? 🌍 www.fs.usda.gov/about-agency...

NEW: per multiple sources, apparently there may be punishment/retaliation coming for EPA employees who signed the Declaration of Dissent this week. People are starting to get letters putting them on administrative leave, seems like potentially targeted at those who signed with their names.

Scientists are pondering potential non-federal alternatives for the National Climate Assessment. AGU/AMS have already announced one initiative -- and there's other historical precedents for major efforts to keep stymied federal science reports alive. My story:

Trump uprooted a major climate effort. Scientists are fighting back.
The future of the National Climate Assessment is uncertain, so researchers are looking to write an alternative version that could serve as a substitute.

i think that democrats should be preparing for the next time they win power but honestly, calling it "project 2029" speaks to a lack of imagination with regard to the task at hand.
