As usual, this UBI proposal doesn't sound at all universal. It sounds more like the earnings-related supplement to unemployment benefit introduced by the Wilson government to mitigate industrial change in the 60s. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Like many men of a certain age, I’m a huge Springstein fan. Here’s a new track with some Dylanesque notes.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Poverty is deepening.

🔎 Our #UKPoverty2026 report was launched this morning.

People in very deep poverty now make up the biggest group of people in poverty, at 6.8 million people.

This is unacceptable for the fifth richest country in the world, and it has consequences.

kay @profafinlayson.bsky.social and I have recorded a LESS THAN ONE HOUR long emergency podcast on what the blocking of Andy Burnham's route back to parliament means.

Why was Burnham Blocked? (Emergency Pod January 2026)
In this actual emergency podcast, Alan and Jem  give way to overwhelming public pressure to respond to a recent decision taken by Labour’s National Executive Committee. The NEC have voted to …

It's well worth comparing the depth and seriousness of Burnham's proposals for reform in the UK with the utter frivolity and short-sightedness of response from SW1's media-political establishment.

Anyway, the Labour Party rule book is basically these days filled with clauses saying “the governing NEC has absolute power to do whatever they like”. So enough from me on this psychodrama, roll on people having the chance to vote for a different party that actually values internal democracy 💚

Thank you, President Roth. No official at my university (Harvard) can make a statement like yours as an official because our institutional voice policy forbids it. That’s too bad, because the successful defense of democracy just might require leaders of its institutions to speak up and defend it.

Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.
Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics
Let us all have the courage displayed by the residents of Minneapolis.

We are not here to be disappointed by Labour anymore. At the by-election in Gorton and Denton, we are here to replace them. This election is a two-way race now - Greens Vs Reform.
Not wanting the biggest by-election in history did indeed turn out to be the reason given by the NEC committee

It's clear that the Green Party are the way to keep Reform out of Manchester.

We are already on the ground in Gorton and Denton - and we are going to be campaigning for every single vote.

The BBC coverage is absolutely terrible.

It leads on "sharply contested narratives"

It has a dramatic skew to the US government

It has posted the video but has failed to report on what it shows: it shows the US govt account is untrue
Walz: "It's a campaign of organized brutality against the people of our state, and today that campaigned claimed another life. I've seen the video from several angles and it's sickening. But I have a strong statement here for our federal govt: Minnesota's justice system will have the last word."

If only we as a country, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence, had some historical events from our founding era that might help us understand why agents of a distant government shouldn’t murder protesters on the streets of the city where they live.
